Word of mouth/TV spots/and ads seem to be the traditional methods to get the name out for new members. Anyone have any ideas on new ways to market a church? Our congregation is quite contemporary and I was thinking e-mail pieces might be a good idea. The only thing is I'm not sure how to obtain mailing lists or how to create the graphic design aspects. Any other thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I appreciate most of these responses, but HOLY COW..... if we don't get more members at our church, it will GO OUT OF BUSINESS. I'm sorry but a church DOES need income on top of offerings alone to survive people.

Word of mouth is the best.
And also be very welcoming to all people, so that visitors will want to come back.
Provide absolutely the best worship experience you can - be intentional about putting the service, music, media, stage design, etc. together so that it is cohesive with the message.
Make sure worship is experiential, not just "sit and watch."
A good resource for worship is

For excellent fliers and print media, you either need to find a volunteer who is a graphic artist and will consider this their ministry to the church, or your church might want to consider hiring a graphic artist part time (that is what the church where I attend finally had to do). Because if that is going to be your first point of contact, it needs to be modern and excellent quality - the days of clip art are long gone.
Another way is to just get your church active within the community -- taking the church outside of its walls. Getting "the church" OUT, is a very effective way of getting the name of your church out.

How about you folks do what Jesus told you to do. Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, minister to the sick and dying, visiting the imprisoned, freeing the oppressed, burying the dead, taking in widows and orphans, etc.
The idea that you want to "market" your church makes me gag. Jesus doesn't need "spin doctors." LIVE the Good News and your actions will attract people.
EDITED TO ADD:
Your entire concern that the church will GO OUT OF BUSINESS indicates exactly what is wrong with the church. It's being run like a business. It's all about the numbers and the money.
Going out of business is probably a very good idea. I hope it happens soon.

You can not market God's word. You can not use ways of the world to get people out of the world. Be Christlike. Be warm and real. If your church is walking in Gods plan for it then have faith for that. Do not look to unbiblical ways of church management.... numbers do not mean a thing. Better to have 10 true christians as a lamp unto the world than 1,000 lukewarm seat warmers. Pray, study Gods word, and do good works in the community, that is how you get the word out.

Market a CHURCH? You are out of your mind. You don't MARKET churches, because they are not goods and produce. What sort of spirituality is in your church if you have to market it?

don't market your church. thats the problem already. I don't want to be rude, and I don't mean too. Reach out to the people in your community. We are very small. less that 30 adults. We are in a very small area. On the 28 of this month we will have our 'Harvest roundup' this is a outreach for the community. We invite everyone in , everychurch every siner everyone. We provide FREE carnival games, door prizes, singing, bible caricature costume contest. Hayrides, free hotdogs, drinks etc. At Christmas we have a "OLD Fashion christmas, with refreshments songs music, treat bags for the children. Reach out to your people let them know that God loves them. Let them know that they can come to your place as they are, then they will want to know what you have that they don't. When people know that God is in your house of worship, they will come.

Teach the true word of God, Don't entertain just to get people in the doors. If your church is truly in Gods view, he will guide people to you.

I, too, am always "on the lookout". But I'm afraid that people dislike "spam" almost as much as they hate people ringing their doorbell on Saturday.
