Yep, make sure its eyes are clear and bright, no black circles (That means its an old one) you want it 6-8 week old, but fine up to 6 months IF it will let you handle it,- never buy until they let you hold it- a wild budgie makes a rubbish pet.Check its feathers are clean and unruffled (as may have mite) . Now, they are very social, so love company and talk. at night when it is perched to roost, put a cover over cage, and leave a space for your mouth, - now keep repeating the same words- such as " pretty boy, pretty boy, pretty boy"- Yea- boring, but it will talk within weeks, once it has learned to say a couple of words- it will pick up any talk, keep it nice and simple at first, move on to "Hes a pretty boy- yes you are a pretty boy" so you are always repeating the same words he has learned, and adding bits on. My Grand-father bred them and taught me how to learn them to talk, as they sell for more money.
By the way, the best talkers are male, so will have a "Hint "of blue on top of its beak, yellow is female." Full "colour over beak (Again, is an Old bird) so be care-full, pet shops want to sell the oldest off to keep the young.Never get 2 as they will only talk to each other in Budgie talk-mmmmm. love Jo xx
PP/s please talk to it all day long without cover on- just saying anything you like, so it learns to recognize your voice.

Yes. As a kid, we kept budgies. Then we graduated to cockatiels. Now, I've got three caiques.

I have eight budgies currently, and have tamed and habituated a few for other people. They're lovely birds, full of spunk and personality, despite their tiny size.

I used to breed them and have had hundreds! There were times when I had well over 100 babies in the various nest boxes! The babies are so cute and sweet!

(Smiling) So many I lost count! They started my love for birds.....Even though I haven't had one in AGES (I keep bigger parrots), I still have a sweet spot for the little monsters...
