First I want to say the Mexican guy who put up the Mexican flag over the American flag was being ignorant. However, in my opinion I think the millitary vet was also just as ignorant. I think he was trying to get attention. Why would he make sure a camera was filming him? If he really wanted to prove a point and look civilized why didnt he just talk to the guy and ask why he was raising the Mexican flag? Oh but nooooo he wanted to start up some contreversy and look like a hero to the trailor park residents of the country. Also whats with the grizzly Adams look? I served in the millitary for four years and we always like to look neat. This guy looks like a bum. I also thought it was funny how Fox and CNN try to make this guy look like a hero. Wow he cut down a flag, big woop! I also liked how they pointed out how the owner just stood there. What was he supposed to do? I think if the owner wanted to he could have beaten the old guy up. The owner came out looking like the better man.

He should be charged with vandalism.
Flag flying etiquette is not law.
And even if it were, vigilantism is wrong.

You know what.. I serving in the U.S Military myself I would of saluted that man if I came 6 paces from him. But I dont remember him tearing down the Mexico flag. Yes it was very disgraceful these people putting the Mexico flag above the United States flag. I would of done the same as he did. I would not even touch the Mexican flag. There is only room for one flag in this great country and that is the good old stars and stripes. If people are going to fly the flag over a flag pole they need to know how.. If you have more than one flag on a pole that is presenting the US flag, the US flag is always on top and the other flags cannot be larger than the U.S flag. That store owner was very disrespectful. I applaud that veteran for what he did. So let me ask you this question? When does talking ever get anything done on these types of issues? The store owner would of told him to screw off, he did the right thing. Atleast someone has some balls to stick up for the great stars and stripes.

I feel Mr. Dick should go to Mexico and put up an American flag above the Mexican flag and see if there is any reaction! When I lived in the Middle East I respected their flag and their country and came home to put a flag pole up where I could fly our American flag everyday. This is America and if they want to celebrate their Mexican holidays then they should go back to Mexico and celebrate!

I applaud the man for doing what he did. I would have done the same thing and I am just a 21 year old woman who is PROUD to be an AMERICAN!
The Hispanic store owner had NO RIGHT to fly his flag over the AMERICAN flag, it is acctually a FEDERAL OFFENSE to do that and he is lucky that the vet took it down for him. I have a neighbor back in Washington on Lummi Island that is form Canada, he put his countrys falg above the American Flag and the Island community about booted him of the Island!
It is one thing to be proud of the country you came from, but if you live in the USA then you need to follow the laws of THIS country and pay your respects to THIS COUNTRY.
Do you have any idea how many people have died protecting our freedom to fly that flag? It is a symbol of respect, a reminder of all that have parished defending this country. Military people have a grater respect for that flag then you and I could ever fathom. The American Flag should be flow high and proud and second to NONE.
He is a HERO and he should get a medal for what he did. At least he had the guts to stand up to these people that are destroying our country right in fron of our faces.

I agree that he shouldn't have torn it down, but why all the press coverage and talk of being a hero it's only a bit of material after all.
I don't understand why you hate the confederate flag so much. I understand there is history behind it but that was a few hundred years ago and no one alive has personal memories of it. Do Americans still burn the union flag (flag of the UK)? how many hate Germans? If you really have to hate someone at least do it for what they did not what the ancestors might have done.
American flag rules apply only to government and public building, his shop was not covered. He was not commiting a criminal act nor was he braking any rules on flying the mexican flag over the American. The only thing he risked was annoying people and getting his shop vandilized which occured.

ill answer this question as neither an american or mexican citizen and as a vexillologist (somebody who researches flag interests and history etc)
i watched this video on youtube
i was horrified to see the mexican flag being flown above the US flag - whether the store owner new or didnt know is not the point
im sure other peope will have mentioned it to him but he no doubt took no notice
the veteran did riht for cutting down the american flag from under the mexican one - and he was right for not damaging the mexican flag in the process
it wasnt an anti mexican act
i would guess he wanted the video camera there to show the world that its not acceptable to fly one national flag above another
you are rather insulting yourself in making this question and some of the comments youve left for people that have answered this question
insulting a minority of poorer americans that have no choice but to live in a trailer park - like tryin to make out they are not good people because they dont have money
then being racist towards us white poeople and expecting us not to be racist to u
3rd insulting the american vet who serves for his country because he has facial hair - it is clean and well kept facial hair
u seem to have a problem with poor people and white people
and why would the mexican want to beat up the vet? taking down a flag doesnt mean he should be violent
it is people like u that make america look bad not people in the trailer parks

You are absolutely right! We all have a right to display whatever flag we want. However, the Mexican guy should have considered the impact of the placement of his flag over the US flag. Instead, he should display them both side by side as equals.
As for the guy who ripped it up. He needs to become civilized. Terrible. He should be in jail for vandalism.
Just because the US may be a more powerful country is no excuse for looking down on others. Would you like it if a more powerful country did the same to the US flag and justified its power as a reason? Shame on that veteran!

I also serve in the Military, a few more than four years and not the ARMY, I am a Marine. But having saying that I tell you that I kind of agree with you. Listen I am from Cuba, but I will not dare to raise the Cuban Flag in the same pole as the American Flag much less to replace it by the Cuban Flag.
If I saw something like that happening in front of me, I would so kind of the same thing.

How does THIS make you feel::
If I was that man, I would have p*ssed on that Mexican flag and THEN I would have torched it.
That flag should NEVER have been flying above the U.S. Flag. Flag laws. That Mexican shop owner broke the law. The old Vet was simply stopping the criminal act. Makes him a hero in my book.

I think the placing of the flags was just a blunder and the owner of the restaurant did not know the proper way to do it. The vet could have brought that up to the owner and have a civilized talk and looked a lot better himself and for the rest of the American people. Chopping other's property is not the American way (oh wait! may be it is, look at Iraq...) Anyway he made us look ignorant and irrational.
