My Bichon is now 8 months old and I know is due to come into her first season. The vet said anytime after 6 months old so she's a little overdue. Are there any signs she could be showing to let me know that it's getting close?

Could you guys give me a break? I'm not asking on spaying advice, but season advice. I'm not stupid, I know that spaying stops unwanted pregnancies but have you considered that i may want to breed? Or that maybe I'm not planning to breed and she has no contact with other dogs? I'm just a little sick of seeing questions on here being turned into a public slaying because the neuter police are out in force. please stick to answering the questiona dn leave the neutering advice to the neutering questions. Thank you for all the other answers though. They have been very helpful x

You may find that she is urinating more frequently, she may become more clingy or she may be the complete opposite and not listen to a word you say! Her vulva will swell slightly and the first sign is usually a drop of blood on her blanket when she first gets up in the morning, or on the backs of her legs or tail. The discharge will be bright red at first and after 1 week - 10 days the discharge will lessen and go lighter in colour. This is when she is at her most receptive to males and must be kept well away from them at all times. . Keep her away from males for at least 21 days, 28 to be really sure.
Count the first day of her season as the first day you see blood. If you are planning on having her spayed, leave it for at least 10 weeks after her season when her hormones have settled down.

I wouldnt say she is overdue at 8 months, my youngest girl had her first season at 9 months (unfortunately she had a pyo. immediately afterwards and had to be spayed and as I wanted to breed from her I was obviously upset). My eldest girl shows no signs whatsoever, even though she is only 3 unless a dog is around we wouldnt know she was in season. All dogs are different, some have silent seasons, some only ever have one, and some never have any. Dont worry about it, as for speying, I would wait until she has had a season until you have her 'done' anyway, as it gives her time to mature.

my yellow labrador was 9 months old when she had her first season, she got very clingy and followed me all over the house, even going into the bathroom with me.Then she got very moody and would snap at other dogs sniffing at her back end. she's now three and had a false pregnancy after her last season and had mastitis, the vet recommended spaying because she could get worse with every season, so she was spayed last friday. I would advise you to get her spayed to prevent any of the problems Amy had and any unwanted attention from other dogs.

They can wait till 2 or 3 YEARS old and still be totaly within normal range (rare but still normal). Often there is no warning till the first signs of heat (bleeding & swollen vulva). My one female gets a bit extra teat just before coming in heat but my other does not.

it could be as late as 12 months, it is best to notice as soon as it starts. When I had girls I would put an old light coloured over their bed so I would notice a spot of blood right away

Each dog is different when their season will come.My dog came in heat at 8 mths. old.You will see blood just like a menstrual cycle for women. You will possibly see alot of dogs(male)when she is.That is a good sign because they smell it blocks away.
