I'm making a donation as a birthday gift. Anyone know of good Georgia (USA) non-profits focused on land/nature preservation, outdoor recreation, or general public health access?

Here is a link to charities based in Georgia from Charity Navigator, a group that researches and rates non-profits. The more stars an organization has, the better the rating.

The Mission of The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy's mission is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.
Our Approach

We have developed a strategic, science-based planning process, called Conservation by Design, which helps us identify the highest-priority places—landscapes and seascapes that, if conserved, promise to ensure biodiversity over the long term.

In other words, Conservation by Design allows us to achieve meaningful, lasting conservation results.

Worldwide, there will be thousands of these precious places. Taken together, they form something extraordinary: a vision of conservation success and a roadmap for getting there—the Conservation Blueprint. Simply put, by protecting and managing these Last Great Places over the long term, we can secure the future of the natural world.

Be careful whom you give to. I would suggest you contact the State department and check into their preservation/conservation programs. Coming from the state it would be legitimate. There are a lot of scammers popping up all over Georgia these days (I live here). Even some of the reputable organizations like Salvation Army, Red Cross, United Way are not fully trusthworthy because only about 40% of what they collect goes to charitable causes....can you imagine that some unscrupulous people get rich off of these scams. All I'm saying is be careful where you give your money. Another suggestion: contact some of the churches and ask for the information on orphanages or poor people and buy groceries and bring it to them instead.

Good luck.
