They are too arrogant in their beliefs and too caught up in them to actaully analyze what and who they are worshipping. They have been indoctrinated into this religion and don't even question it (mostly). Plus they are threatened with thing like hell and purgatory, no wonder they're at least a little scared.

The Roman Catholic Church argues that Scripture was given to men by the Church and therefore the Church has equal or greater authority to it. However, even among the Roman Catholic Church’s writings (from the First Vatican Council), you will find the acknowledgment that the Church councils that determined which books were to be considered the Word of God did nothing but recognize what the Holy Spirit had already made evident. That is, the Church did not “give” Scriptures to men, but simply “recognized” what God, through the Holy Spirit, had already given. As A. A. Hodge states, when a peasant recognizes a prince and is able to call him by name, it does not give him the right to rule over the kingdom. In like fashion, a church council recognizing which books were God-breathed and possessed the traits of a God-inspired book, it does not give the church council equal authority with those books.

You are correct that the history of the Catholic Church is "littered with immoral popes whose lust for power and influence (k)new no bounds."
Remember that one of Jesus' original Apostles was a corrupt person who later betrayed Him.
The catholic Church is holy not because the people are holy but because the Church is guided by the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit is holy.

There are good people and bad people in EVERY religion unfortunately the Catholic Church always comes under fire. We are always targeted from negative opinions. I don't care what you say there are good people in the Catholic Church that do good, we are not martyrs and I don't think that the good person goes out and advertises their unlimited kindness or generosity to others.
Look around you will see bad in other Religions, it's just the way the world is. Even in Government there are those that do good but the bad is always reported.

You may have failed to notice, but Catholics have never been ones to follow anyone other than Jesus Christ.
And while a number of popes may have fallen a bit short of the mark, Jesus also had his Judas ... so that is no measure of any lack of inherent holiness in Christ's one and only church.
The church remains holy because God makes it so ... certainly not because it is governed and populated by sinners.
You may also have failed to notice that while Jesus IS true God, he IS also truly a man ... so many of our man made traditions do have Christ as their source.
Anyone who limits their appreciation and understanding of the authentic Christian faith only to that which is contained in the plain text of the bible is a fool ... since the bible itself states that so much more was accomplished by Jesus and taught to the apostles by him ... not to mention that which was perfectly brought to mind for them by the Holy Spirit, on Pentecost.
It was the protestant reformers who (much, much) later made up a whole new religion, based on the flawed traditions/doctrines of faith alone and scripture alone ... and it was the protestant reformers who changed the bible to suit their newly invented faith traditions.
Today, the descendents of those same reformers continue to invent totally new and never before seen types of Christainity ... if it can actually be termed as such ... and they show little or no regard for God's authentic truth ... or for the dignity of Christ's one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic church ... the church that truly converted the world for Christ ... a thousand years before the first protestant ever thumped a bible.
The history of the Catholic church is the history of the modern world ... and that is an open book.
It's obviously something you never studied for yourself, because if you did, you would not have posted this question.
I suggest you do a bit more research before you come to any other ridiculous and incorrect conclusions about the only church that Jesus Christ ever founded, authorized, empowered, and eternally guaranteed, for the purpose of our salvation.
It might just make the critical difference in your eternal existence.

the catholic crusader has spoken.......silence........ok so anyway yea your right and it is wierd how much of a strong hold they have on these people. I really don't like the system not the people of it, it is not there fault. I have proven time and time again using scripture that what the teach goes against the bible, to my good catholic friend. It makes me think that when in revelation it talks about the anti christ I'm starting to believe it is the catholic church (not the people) the pope.

Some people just need something to believe in. Every body has different needs. Some people dare to question and doubt, others, maybe out of fear of rejection or isolation prefer to follow the mass.
Fear is the best ways to get any body's attention fast. Bad parenting is another great example of this.
Though the question is valid and interesting we should focus on self education. Each person needs to find there own peace with God or themselves.

The Catholic church has bleak and gory history but the question about why people believe in man-made myths can be addressed to all believers, whatever their denomination.

Wow, a Theist troll, fascinating.
Of course your beliefs are no more 'supernatural' than any other Theist, but it is entertaining to see you try and upset your fellow believers.
