I wish I could provide a more comprehensive answer, including historical timeline and treasure map to go find the tablets. Problem is, no one knows where the tablets are located. There's plenty of theories though. Some think they are under the Temple Mount in Jerusalem or were taken down to Ethiopia following the siege of Jerusalem at the turn of the century. But again, they are no where to be found.
Personally, I'm glad they haven't been found because they would quickly become the most worshipped relic from old days. They'd also cause a ton of controversy and further complications in Israel.

RE:
The Ten Commandments- what happened to the tablets?
Whatever happened to the original tablets upon which the Ten Commandments were written? Do they still exist, and if so, where are they?

Something that has always puzzled me about the story of Moses and the ten commandments. YHWH Yahweh, Jehovah writes with his own finger the first 10 commandments on stone. Then Moses drops and breaks God's own handwriting. What does God do? He tells Moses to write another set on stone. After that God just simply lets Moses write all the hundreds and hundreds of other laws, the majority of which if broken by any Israelite would result in that persons being stoned to death. Is there something wrong with this story? God cannot even supply a second copy of his stone tablets, let alone a permanent copy of all his commandments in his own handwriting? What gives?

As other people have noted, thet were kept in the Ark of the Covenant, which is currently missing. Didn't you ever watch "Raiders of the Lost Ark"?
---------------------------------
The Ark of the Covenant (ארון הברית in Hebrew: aron habrit) is described in the Hebrew Bible as a sacred container, wherein rested the stone tablets containing the Ten Commandments as well as other sacred Israelite objects....
...When the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and plundered the temple, the Ark entered the domain of legend. Many historians suppose that the ark was probably taken away by Nebuchadnezzar and destroyed. The absence of the ark from the Second Temple was acknowledged...
...In contrast to the view of many historians (who suppose that the Ark was taken away and destroyed), variant traditions about the ultimate fate of the Ark include the intentional concealing of the Ark under the Temple Mount; the removal of the Ark from Jerusalem in advance of the Babylonians (this variant usually ends up with the Ark in Ethiopia); the removal of the Ark by the Ethiopian prince Menelik I (purported son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba); removal by Jewish priests during the reign of Manasseh of Judah, possibly taken to the Jewish Temple at Elephantine in Egypt; the miraculous removal of the Ark by divine intervention (Cf. 2 Chronicles); and even the destruction of the original ornate Ark under King Josiah's reforms (when it may have been seen as violating the commandment against graven images) and replacement with a simple wooden box, easily lost when the Temple fell...

I haven't read the bible in years..., but I believe that when Moses came down from the mountain to deliver the tablets (and thus the laws) to the people, they had melted down every piece of gold they had and made a statue to which to pray. Moses was mad (disappointed would probably be more like it) and he broke the tablets by throwing them.
If God "reprinted" them, I don't remember. I hope this helps.

The first set were detroyed by Moses he went back and got a second set. This set was placed in the Ark of the Covenant. Which has been missing but rumored to be in a temple in Ethiopia. Supposedly the queen of Ethiopia took it with her per Solomons request.

It's a common misconception for people to think they are in the ark of the covenant. What the story actually says is in the ark, is the table of destiny, which is believed to contain the sacred geometry of solomon's temple. As for the 10 commandments, moses busted them supposedly, didn't he?
