hello I want to know my husband is going to be stationed in south Korea, and when he gets there my son and I are gonna come a month later. Now I heard that my son and I can come over there and live with him when he extend his tour in korea, but We might not get command sponsorship but we canm get O.H.A. for housing is that true. cause I dont need to be command sponsor right away. Im already home schooling my son anyway. And also I long should he wait to extend when he gets to Korea. My husband said that he thinks that he can do it anytime as long as it before 90 days before he leaves, can someone weather it's a military spouse or soldier that can help me with this question. thank you and many blessings.

even if you do go over, there is NO guarantee that he will be granted OHA, especially if you go over Non Command Sponsored.

If he wants sponsorship, he needs to request it/offer to extend as soon as he gets there. waiting until just before he leaves will get it denied.

His command here or there or both should have someone you can ask these questions to. The thing that I believe is most important before you make a move is medical. I know a friend of mine could have moved to Japan with her husband, but she would have had to pay for her move (not his), found a home out in town. (which was on them) but the reason she did not make the move was she would not have been covered with medical. The base did not offer medical for family... at all... that is why they would not move the family there in the first place.

Someone will know these answers at his command.

Medical can add up to huge amounts, and if you're not authorized to be there on his orders, they will not cover you. So be careful.

Don't do anything until he gets command sponsorship!!! Without it, the military won't pay for transportation, movement of HHG, housing, medical, school or anything else. Let alone authorize VISAs for your entry into the country as temporary residents. He can ONLY get command sponsorship from his new command in Korea. As for the extension, I would wait until they authorize command sponsorship, or you might find yourself doing an extra year separated.

you cant stay in korea for more than 90 days without a visa......and you most likely wont be able to get one without command sponsorship......also all you and your sons medical bills will come out of your pocket.....and its really expensive for what is actually substandard care in korea. also you will have to pay out of pocket for you and your sons transportation as well as any household items you wish to move. you are not covered by SOFA......and even something tiny like a traffic ticket could turn into a big deal, you most likely wont be able to get a drivers license or a car either. as for OHA....i know in the AF anyway when my husband went to korea i stayed in the US and got BAH for his home of record while he was gone, i wanted to join him but was told that my BAH would stay the same even if i moved over there.

Hello. I am very sorry to tell you, but I am not sure that you will be able to draw that pay. You need to check your spouse's orders. I am very sure that the tour you mention is not normally accompanied. This means the Army does not want the servicemember to travel with his/her family. To you that means that your family will not see any compensation whatsoever if you and your son move there. The answer to your question depends on the length of his tour there and what entitlements his orders allow.
Good luck and take care
