Hi,

My question is this. Why when you type into the excel boxes
1
3
4
and you drag down,
the next number is
5.6667

How does excel come out with this number?

this is called "artificial intelligence"
if you were to fill the sequence 1,3,6,10 and drag down, it would continue with 15,21 and so on. the logic is that it calculate the difference between the first and the next cell as 2 with an increment of 1.
excel is very "smart". ("oversmart" sometimes.......)
so, since there is no simple logical sequence in your list it must have added the average of the difference of the first three numbers to the third figure. (i may be wrong, in this case)

Excel automatically figures the difference or the interval between the numbers and comes up with the appropriate number in the new cell.

If you were looking to drag down for auto numbering, you forgot the number 2.
