Alleve is the brand name for naproxin sodium. Ibuprofin is ibuprofin (brand names Advil, Motrin, & others.)
I think both are considered NSAIDS. Alleve is supposed to work longer with lower dose, but I personally get better results with ibuprofin.
Be careful taking big doses of either long term, but especially alleve. My dad was prescribed it for years prescription strength before it went on over-the-counter market. He took it for back and leg pain until and after he got a hip transplant. Apparently they are supposed to monitor liver levels with this amount but they didn't, and a few years later he got liver cancer and died within 2 months. The doctor and hospital would never admit that was why, but I have always wondered, and have since heard of other similar cases.
These drugs can also thin the blood, so if you are on blood pressure meds, you should talk to a doctor about using them.
(I am definitely not a nurse or doctor, so I recommend you research this further----I tried web surf, but didn't turn up anything helpful. What does your doctor or pharmacist say?)

A good friend of mine was taking Alleve for arthritis pain, she took it four times a day for six months, she noticed she was getting ill. Thinking she was getting flu she ignored the Alleve syndrome and continued taking it, as it relieved her arthritis.
After about eight months, her flu symptoms hadn't left, she was fevering, she was becoming more ill and now weak.
She called here one day, so weak she couldn't get out of bed, could hardly speak, hadn't eaten in days, drank, etc.
My wife called an ambulance and she went to a hospital.
She had a complete kidney shut down, from Alleve. He one kidney was totally shut down and the other was barely hanging on. She was on dialysis for months, the one kidney came back but it took eight months for the other one to come back.
The doctor said he was sure it was from Alleve and said, he saw it happen before, he reported it to the company and to the CDC. Nothing was ever done. My friend is part of a National lawsuit against Alleve for what happen. A class action suit.

Aleve's active ingredient is naproxen sodium. Here's some more information about it:

Ibuprofen is the drug commonly found in things like Advil. Here's some more information about it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibuprofen
They both are anti-inflammatory drugs with that can relieve pain and reduce a fever. The main difference is Aleve lasts longer in the body and is more powerful. Naproxen is actually scheduled as a prescription drug in many other countries.

They are completely different chemical compounds. Ibuprofen is the generic name you might see sold as Motrin or Advil.
Alleve is the brand name for naproxen sodium.
