I have been researching SLR's for a while, and have all but decided to purchase the Nikon D40, because it got stellar reviews from various places, and was well spoken of here on Y!A.

In talking with a photographer friend the other night, she suggested that I spend the (roughly) extra $150 for the D40X. The only difference, it seems to me, are megapixels (6.1 vs 10.2), and a fraction of shutter speed increase. The only advantage I could see to higher megapixels is if I decided to print the photos and display them in a larger frame (which is a possibility, should I capture a great shot).

An extra $150 is within my budget, but if it's something not worth bothering with, then I don't want to spend it. Any advice from SLR experts is appreciated.

The difference between 6mp and 10mp is negligible for most purposes. I would certainly know, as I own/use the Nikon D200 (10mp) and the Fujifilm S5 Pro (6mp), and believe me, the resolution differences can't be seen at prints 13" x 19" in size. At that point, lenses and technique have more influence than sensor resolution.

Other differences include a lower ISO capability (ISO 100 on the D40x vs. ISO 200 on the D40), faster continuous shooting (3 fps vs. 2.5), auto ISO goes down to 200.

Frankly, you'll get more bang for your buck by upgrading your lens selection than by upgrading your camera body. I suggest spending that $150 on a better lens.

Is the D40x worth the extra money? Only if you want to have bragging rights.

Well to be honest with you I looked into 4 DSLRs, Nikon D40 Vs. Canon XT both 8MPs and the Canon XTi Vs. Nikon D40x and both of them are 10MPs. Once I chose the brand (Canon) I spent the extra on the XTi, no regrets what so ever, I love it and it's my first DSLR.

If you want the D40x spend the extra cash.

I used a D70 ( 6.1 MP) for awhile and had no issues printing posters with great resolution up to 20x30 !! Although I now use a D80 @ 10.2 MP, I think the advice about going with the lower price and upgrading the lens is a great suggestion. If you want to really improve the camera, go to a D80 ... however, if that's too pricey ... stick with getting a better lens !

I think you answered your own question. If it's a possibility that you may want larger prints, then spend the extra $150.

I think it's worth it to upgrade to the 10.2 megapixel.

I learned a long time ago that its better to have a feature and not need it than to need it and not have it. IMO you'd be wise to go with the D40x.
