"Anything other than a physical ailment, that distortes the mind from it's natural ability is sin."

This was a response to a question regarding Marijuana. Now there are a variety of medicine that affect and distort the mind from its natural ability. I'll list a couple.

Morphine - pain killer.
Codeine - pain killer
Benylin - cough remedy
Anti-histamines - allergy treatments
Various drugs for chemotherapy induce forgetfulness.

Does this mean then that Christians should never take drugs to cure an ailment? The above comment suggests that only ailments not cures that modify the functioning of the mind are acceptable.

What about drugs for mental illness? All of them alter the mind.

Is it a sin to be treated for cancer, depression, schizophrenia, pain, allergies etc?

Jimmy bon I've just listed some medication which are prescription meds which clearly do affect the mind. I've worked for 10 years in the pharmaceutical industry and know what I've talking about. I've a Ph.D in Psychopharmacology.

sounds like rubbish to me, if I break my leg give me the pain meds!!! There is no way we can be expected to endure a ton of pain without something soothing. I mean if you want to suck it up and just pray than power to you but I honestly couldn't.

Both the statement you quote and the question you ask reflect a dualist understanding of the self. In other words, it assumes that the physical processes and mental processes are distinct from each other.

In reality the physical processes and the mind are intrinsically related. If you have a headache, this is normally due to reactions in the brain to certain circumstances (e.g. dyhydration, bright lights), and the cure to this can be a painkiller which physically slows down the electrical messages of pain cause the pain to be killed (or at least numbed).

I do not see treatments that effect the physical body as having much at all to do with sin, since sin is generally a matter of the will and the mind.

However, taking a drug that affects the ability of the mind or the will to impose itself could lead to sin.

For example, drinking alcohol impairs judgement so a person who might normally be sensible, when drunk, might decide to drive and end up hurting or killing someone by dangerous driving.

In this circumstance taking the drug is not in itself sinful, however, it may lead the person, through the act or will of the mind to act in a sinful way.

In answer to your question then, I'm not really sure. I've just rabbited on for a while, with no real point I'm afraid. I think what I'm trying to say is My Christian perspective would be thaty the drug in itself is not sinful, just as painkillers are not sinful. However, some drugs, if misued may lead an individual to sin, although this is still a matter of their own will and choice.,

Some believe that.

However, what I believe is that anything that actually HARMS a person (whether physically or mentally) is a sin. I approve of marijuana for medicinal uses (glaucoma, terminal cancer, things like that), but not for recreational use. I don't believe it was intended for recreational use. It damages the lungs, takes away a person's motivation, kills brain cells, causes apathy and laziness...AND as if all that wasn't enough, it's emotionally addictive. A person normally won't have a physical addiction to marijuana, but they can have an emotional or mental addiction to it. I would know. I used to be a major pothead.

Well to start with I should think most Christians take some form of drugs albeit for heart disease or arthritis. I find that many so-called Christians twist things to make it work for them. Most wouldn't give a Blind Man a light ( I know alot of so-called Christians that turn their back on the less fortunate).

I also know a few who take drugs for the diseases mention above plus painkillers like the ones you've mentioned..

Hope this helps and have a nice day :) x

I think some denominations of christianity take things to different levels. I take pain killers and have taken anti-depressents, as these are legal medicines. I wouldn't however take drugs or smoke or drink excessively as these do damage and the bible tells us to respect our bodies and keep it clean (morally and physically). Although I agree that marijuana is wrong, I think the answerer you mention was being a bit over the top!

Personally I dont think taken "prescribed" medication is wrong. As long as you have a distinct reason for it. If you get hooked and take it for no reason then yes I believe it is wrong. There are many ways to analyze this scripture but I think that in my perspective its okay to take pills if you need them for a physical illness.

In the bible it has instructions on how to make an oil that contains marijuana. God instructed Moses to to take the ingredients and use them to annoint people. Jesus even used this oil to annoint and to rub on injured parts of the body to help with pain. They used it on the forhead to annoint so it would enter the blood stream the fastest since that is the thinnest part of your skin.

Drugs used to relieve pain or improve the comfort or life of a patient are to be credited to be of benefit to the work of God.
However, any form of self harm or the harming of others is against the christian beliefs.
