Most people don't have any understanding of the meaning behind their or their kids names. I work in a school, and asked all my kids to find out what their name meant and why their parents chose it. Some of the name meanings were great, but most of the reasons why their names were chosen was because 'my parents like the sound of it'/

Christopher means Christ Bearer, so its saying that you want your child to reflect Jesus in their life. Its not quite the same as naming your child Jesus.

Good question. Perhaps Christopher has become a much more common name and people feel uncomfortable thinking about using Jesus.

It could well be related to the meaning of the names.
As already stated Christopher means carrier of the anointed of god ( of greek oragin).
Jesus on the other hand is a roman invented name to replace the Hebrew name Joshua, which means Jehovah saves.

people are silly at times, make holy what is unholy, and cast as unholy what is holy.

nothing wrong for keeping names as Jesus, plus Jesus is not the son of Mary, he is known be Euhesua, or issu or Isa, but not Jesus. cos Jesus is latinized and he is a Israeli man

Jesus is a fairly common name among Spanish speakers, as is Mary (Maria). I would imagine it's meant in honor, not as a joke.

"Christopher" means a follower of Christ, which is what they hope their child will be.

"Jesus" is the name of a person that they worship. They usually out of respect choose not to use that name as a "common" name.

There is a difference between wanting to call your child a follower of Christ, and wanting to call your child by his actual name.
