I have searched on the internet, on the bbc website, msn website and sony itself and there is no mention that the 60gb is being phased out. However in discussion forums and hmv they say that sony has said 60gb will be phased out and replaced with the 40gb version.
Can anyone let me know, preferably with evidence in terms of a link to the credible webpage?

Ooh my friend just phoned Sony and they confirmed that it will NOT be phased out in the UK..
All this phasing out business are just rumours. Thank the Lord for that!!

Thank God I Bought A 60GB Model Earlier In The year. No Memory card slots, No PS2 Compatibilty, No wifi, Only 2 USB ports. Its Reverting Back To The PS2 !!!

yes, their making a cheapo version with smaller drive, only 2 usb ports, no card reader and no backwards compatibility
theyre also bringing out an 80gb expensive one later in the year
people are morons, theyll pay 200 quid for a crippled one then moan they cant use the ps2 catalogue

Yes, saw it on Yahoo! News a few days ago. I will want the PS2 compatibility function though so I hope I can still get one that has it new come next year.

Sony does it all over the world (except Japan, I think) due to cost reduction plan. In PAL zone is going to be only 40GB version. Check those out:

yep its true go to www.n4g.com/ps3 there are plenty of links from that site with proof. i dont have it anymore but the retail store game emailed me about it 2 as i am on there mailing list.
