Jesus foretold that this would happen. After his death, and most especially after the death of his apostles, "weeds" were oversown in among the "wheat" that he had planted. False religious practices were introduced into Christianity. These teachings and practices proliferated until it was difficult to distinguish which was which. We are now in the time of "harvest". The angels are separating true Christians from false. (Matthew 13:24-30) True Christians are obeying God's command to "get out from among them, and separate yourselves,’and quit touching the unclean thing" (2Corinthians 6:17, Revelation 18:4) Soon false religion will be destroyed and all that will be left is the true. That is when there will be only one religion.

Because while they share a common distant origin, in the present day they have great differences. For example, while Muslims and Jews believe G-d has no physical form or anything like a physical form and to believe he does is evil; Christians believe that to believe he was not incarnated in a human body is evil.
And while Muslims believe Muhammed was the last and greatest prophet, Jews believe Malachi was the last prophet and Moses was the greatest of them.
There are real similarities between the three faiths, but also real differences. So its best to appreciate the similarities, acknowledge the differences, and not pretend one or the other exists where it doesn't.
The first step in getting along is acknowledging the 'other' as he truly is, and not how we would want him to be.

The people who invented each religion had different goals and to achieve those goals, they needed to unite the constituency under a common system that was different from the previous or other systems.

Whenever you have any group or groups made up of human beings there wi be differences of opinion. Of those faiths that all share the Penteteuch as their foundations, it is important to remember that Christians recognize the Jewish faith as the foundation of their own. They also believe that the laws are not dismissed, but fulfilled through Jesus the Messiah. THe Old as well as the NEw Testament are equally important to the CHristian. The muslim faith is based on the revelations of Mohammed who also considers Jesus a Prophet.

God promised Abraham that he would be the father of many nations. He told Abraham that he would have so many descendants that there would be too many to count, like grains of sand. Ishmael, his oldest son, and Isaac, his second son, were both promised to be a father of nations. Isaac is the father of the Jewish nation. Ishmael is thought by scholars to be the father of the Muslim nation. Jesus descended from Isaac's son, Jacob. So God fulfilled His promise to Abraham to make him the father of many nations. And there are many, many people. Too many people for Abraham to count if he were alive.

People in general like to be big fishes in small ponds--even within the separate religions, there are numerous sects and denominations. Human nature seems to go against unity, since we all think we are the only ones who truly have it all "figured out."

If their populations were to decrease to the levels where consolidation were a viable option, they would, but even the Christian churches can't stay "one church," (to use biblical terms) but break apart into smaller groups that are more manageable by individual organizations.
