you get your language when you arrive in Monterey. you will typically be given a choice of 1-3 out of classes that your DLAB test qualify you for that are starting up within the next 30 days. Of course, there is ALWAYS the possibility that you will show up and be told in no uncertain terms which language you are getting. Even if you are told what language at Basic, don't believe it. Just before we left, there were about five guys who showed up who thought they had Korean. uh,no, they ended up in Arabic instead.
Words of advice: Stay AWAY from the Mucky Duck. eat at Archie's. Study Hard, keep your nose clean and get out and enjoy the area. Do 17 Mile Drive and take a day trip to San Francisco if you can.

It depends what branch you are in and who is in command at DLI - National Guard gets to picks when they sign their contract. MOstly Army finds out when they get their orders to go to basic and DLI, I know some AirForce that didn't find out until they got here, but they had an idea based on how long their orders said they would be hear. Not sure on Navy or Marines. You will love Monterey. Be sure to go to Compagno's right outside of Taylor gate - they are the best sandwiches ever - I just had one for the first time and they love the military - it is basically tailored to the military. They are making Korean a Cat 5 language (the highest) Arabic is the largest language right now. Japanese is only going to officers right now. They just ended Spanish. Persian Farsi are high as well as Mandarin. Mandarin and Arabic are Cat 4. Russian is small right now. Korean and Mandarin are the longest programs, Arabic is just a few weeks shorter, but it is pretty long as well. Good luck, study hard, don't think that one bad test will affect you - it will, they have tougher standards than college.

When I got to DLI, after BMTC which was 2 weeks a million years ago ;) I sat down with the chief in charge of assignments and gave him my top 3. Based on my DLAB scores, he decided my language.. so some time within your first month at DLI, I'd imagine.
Depending on the language, there can be a long wait to get into a class. I waited almost 6 months for my Russian class to start.
Have fun at DLI, its such an amazing place!!

I found out what language I was assigned when I received my orders to go to DLI, when you get your duty assignment after Basic is when you find out what language you will be training in. I got Russian, although I had had 3 years of German in High School. The language they teach you is based on your DLAB scores, the higher your score, the higher the level of language, Level 3 (the highest) is Mandarin Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Russian, etc, in other words, languages which have a different alphabet from English.

based on the needs of the Air tension and your DLAT score. The AF determines how many human beings they choose in each and each language and at what pay grades. They then look at what they at the instant have and what they venture they could have contained in the close to destiny. IE: if 20 russian linguist desperate to pass away the AF after thier first enlistment this 365 days, particularly than reenlist, then the Air tension might want extra russian linguist yet whilst each Farsi linguist desperate to reenlist and stay contained in the AF, then there is not any choose for extra Farsi linguist. 2. Then its based on your DLAB rankings, with larger rankings, going in direction of the class 4 languages. 3. there is not any thank you to guarentee what language you would be knowledgeable on, at cases, you may get a call between one or 2 languages, yet commonly its gonna be what the AF needs on the time you pass to Tech college. 4. Pay is the comparable as every person else makes, based on your paygrade. Plus enlisted flight pay

I'm in the National Guard so I got to choose mine after I took the DLAB. I went for Mandarin because there are a lot of promotion slots for that language here.

normally you are required to be proficient in a language before you are assigned such a job.
Knowledge is mandatory of: a designated language; radio communications operations theory; communications techniques; operation of acquisition, recording, and processing equipment; communications networks; formats, terminology, and theory of traffic analysis; organization of designated military forces; procedures for processing and distributing intelligence data; and methods for handling, distributing, and safeguarding military information.
here's what the army says. http://www.goarmy.com/JobDetail.do?id=97
