Vista is the latest version of Windows released earlier this year. It requires a high end computer (something made in the last year to 18 months to run).
XP is the last version of Windows that has been around for about 5 years. It is the most common version found today, and will run on most computer around today. That will probably change with Vista taking the lead by the end of next year.
If you have an older computer, stick with XP. If you are purchasing a new computer it will probably come with Windows Vista instead.

As said before, vista is a new version of XP. But from experiance, Vista looks better but because it is new but it still has a few glitches that XP dosn't have. I have a vista but I use my XP. We have a printer that doesn't read vista system formats and it is a new and verry expenceive printer. Best thing to do is wait a bit longer before buying one (if you were thinking of it).
