Me and my girl have been together for five years. She just found out she has herpes from an outbreak with all the signs, swollen glands and sores and feeling ill. And then another outbreak about two weeks later. From everything I've been reading those mostly happen after you've just become infected 4 to 6 weeks after you have goten it.
Is this correct ?
Can you first outbreak happen after years of having it?
Can you have signs like this after many years or should I suspect she's been fooling around on me ?
I've read people can have it and not know, if so, do outbreaks get worse all of a sudden.

Most people experience their first outbreak of genital herpes anywhere from 2 - 20 days after being infected with the virus. However, some people don't experience their first outbreak for months and even years after being infected which can sometimes make it difficult to determine who they got it from.

And yes, cold sores, which are usually caused by HSV1, but can also be caused by HSV2, can be spread by kissing someone who has cold sores, sharing a drink, sharing chap stick, lipstick, cigarettes, etc. If someone has cold sores and your son drinks after them then he could contract oral herpes. Cold sores are VERY common. It's estimated about 75 - 80% of the WORLD has them.

Good luck and take care!

the truth is you can pass herpes without having sex. It is spread through skin to skin contact. You can also have herpes for years with no symptoms. Stress, changes in hormone levels, and many other factors may bring about a first, or recurrent outbreaks. I would not rule out the possibility that your girlfriend is fooling around on you but it is not necessarily the case. MOST outbreaks happen within the first few months of contracting the virus but many people have no symptoms at all. I suggest getting a blood test done to test for the virus. I also recommend having a serious talk with your girlfriend about how you are feeling about her having herpes. Good luck.

Most importantly, trust your partner. Unfortunatley more than 90% of americans have some for of herpes (HSV1 and HSV2).
It is actually possible to have had herpes and never have an outbreak. Some people never have outbreaks, while others have outbreaks frequently.

With reference to how you get it: Herpes is highly contagious and can be acquired from kissing, sharing drinks and sexual intercourse.

The downside to herpes is that even when you have no symptoms (sores) you can still pass the virus.

I learned that I had herpes almost 10 years ago and at the time I was a virgin. Since I was a kid and as long as I can remember I had cold sores. I remember having them as young as 5, so it is actually possible to be born with it.

With reference to medications and alternatives: You name it , I tried it.
EVERYTHING! Valtrex, diets, acyclovir. I have hsv1 and 2however have never had genital outbreaks. The problem with medications now is that somtimes it takes too long to dry out. 2 years ago i found an excellent topical that helps reduce your outbreaks and most importantly to me, dry out the cold sores almost instantly (the healing process).

There are 2 main types of herpes: the one that causes genital lesions and the one that causes cold sores. It is a virus that cannot be killed. It remains in your system and can become active during times of stress or when your immune system is down for some reason. The only way to distinguish between the two is through specialized tests. The herpes that causes cold sores CAN produce genital symptoms if you engage in oral sex. And remember that even if there are no obvious signs of it (like a cold sore around the lips), you could still get a genital break-out if the virus is present but has not "raptured" yet.
So do not assume that your girlfriend has been fooling around. If it really bothers you, you can always ask to have it tested to see exactly which strain it is. Also, was your girlfriend sexually active before she started going out with you? If so, she may have contracted it from a previous boyfriend.
