Here's the deal--I really want to be vegetarian. The thought of eating flesh just grosses me out and I can't stand the idea of animals dying for me. The thing is...and I know this is awful but I would really miss eating fish. And I dont want to be one of those people who say they are veg but then eat fish. That really isn't right. I need you to convince me to go vegetarian. Really gross me out. Give me facts to make me never want to touch meat again. I appreciate it!

-About 40% of the fish that is going to be used for food never even makes it to become food because it dies while on the way to be killed or dies of a disease. Many of these diseases are carried into the food we eat.
-According to the UN "Over 60 percent of what is currently caught in the global shrimp fishery is discarded, making it among the most environmentally damaging in the world."
-Over-fishing can cause altering habitats and create greater competition for resources by animals
-It takes 5 tons of wild caught fish to feed 1 ton of farmed salmon *think about this in terms of pollution!*
~Out at sea, about 300,000 whales, dolphins and porpoises die in fishing nets per year
~About 3,500 seals are killed each year in *Scotland alone* because fish farmers consider them a threat to farmed salmon
~Long-line fishing practices kill about 100,000 sea birds each year. 17 of the 21 species of albatross that are killed now face extinction.

Here are some of what the fish go through
~Carbon dioxide stunning
The fish are placed in a bath saturated with carbon dioxide. This environment causes changes to behaviour, with fish being observed to shake their heads and tails vigorously trying to escape.

~Suffocation on air / ice
The fish may be taken out of the water and allowed to die through suffocation in air. Alternatively, fish are removed from water onto ice. This method prolongs suffering as the cooling effect of the ice can lengthen the time to unconsciousness with fish aware of what is happening to them 15 minutes after being taken out of water.

~Gill Cutting and Percussive Stunning
Gill cutting without prior stunning has shown that certain responses of fish are not immediately lost and vigorous movements occurred. Percussive stunning involves the fish being hit on the head with a rapidly moving, manually applied club. When sufficient force is applied the concussion can be irrecoverable, however in practice the stun is often not immediate and fish are hit more than once.

Hope you are convinced!

think about all the pollution in the waters, and what those fish could have been eating. Toxic waste?

Did you know there's a VERY common form of "mad fish disease" called "phisteria"?

But keep in mind.. your health is more important than a "label" IF you cut out all meat instead of fish..you are certainly alot better off than if you were to keep eating all the other meat.. If that diet works for you.. good.. stick with it awhile.. then maybe later you can cut out fish.

But if you want to do it.. do it! Just tell yourself "This is a decision I have made and I do not need to be wishy-washy about it.. I am not going to do it halfheartedly."

Good luck with a healthier you!!

Sounds like you're ready to give up every meat except fish, right? You're a good deal of the way there.

Now, before you start worrying about omega 3 fatty acids, ground flax seeds and flax oil are good sources of omega-3s. You just cannot cook with flax oil, so use it in salad dressing or drizzle it on cooked veggies. Hemp seed and walnuts are also good sources of omega 3s.

There's a company called May Wah (www.vegieworld.com) that makes a bunch of analogues, including seafood analogues. Try those and see if it will satisfy your seafood craving1

Would you ever eat a human? That's what it's like your doing when you meat and fish. Think of everywhere they've been. Would you like to all of a sudden get your head chopped off, fried, and served on a platter? Think of all it's guts and blood. Think of how that fish could have had a great life, before you decided to eat it, when you could've eaten something else to give you that protien.

I usually don't like grossing people out... but you seem like a glutton for punishment.

The consumption of fish is by far the most significant source of ingestion-related mercury exposure in humans.

Mercury damages the central nervous system, endocrine system, kidneys, and other organs, and adversely affects the mouth, gums, and teeth. Exposure over long periods of time or heavy exposure to mercury vapor can result in brain damage and ultimately death. Mercury and its compounds are particularly toxic to fetuses and infants. Women who have been exposed to mercury in pregnancy have sometimes given birth to children with serious birth defects (see Minamata disease).

Mercury exposure in young children can have severe neurological consequences, preventing nerve sheaths from forming properly. Mercury inhibits the formation of myelin, the building block protein that forms these sheaths.

There is some evidence that mercury poisoning may predispose to Young's syndrome (men with bronchiectasis and low sperm count).

Mercury poisoning in the young has been hypothesized as a cause of autistic behaviors. This hypothesis is controversial, as much evidence suggests that about 90% of autism is explained by genetics. The hypothesis has not been confirmed by reliable studies.

Mercury poisoning's effects partially depend on whether it has been caused by exposure to elemental mercury, inorganic mercury compounds (as salts), or organomercury compounds.

You dont need me to convince you to do anything.

The only reason you should make any life decision is for yourself, not for me and not for anyone else.

I would not like to have a hook through my face or lodged in my throat, stomach or lungs.

I would not like to suffocate to death.

I would not like to be gutted alive.
