that's tricky.. best you can do is research.. find cheeses that are suppose to be vegan friendly.. best you can do is keyword search in google.

then you can read up if they're really vegan friendly.. most aren't.... they contain casein and other dairy elements under different additive names.

IE:

key word: vegan cheeses really vegan?

google.com result:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=vegan+cheeses+really+vegan%3F

or when you drop by the local grocer or another store and see cheeses that are suppose to be vegan or veggie, jot down the company name and the name of the brand of cheese... then research in google.com you'll find sites resulting in information.

or you can buy the products if you can afford to waste the money just in case.. and key up the ingredients too.

unfortunately i find over 70% of vegan cheeses available to the consumer have dairy or animal product in them. (under fancy biproduct names or it will specifically say dairy or milk in fine print.)

this is a bother.. this also happens with many other soy products..

so do the research and don't fret... fresh vegetables and fruits are still the safest route..

:D

Yes...although you have to really search for it. Most soy cheese are NOT vegan, most contain casein (a milk protein) in it which makes it not even close to being vegan. There are a few brands out there that are totally dairy free and they usually make it clear on the package for the consumer and label it vegan. if not, read the ingredient list very carefully and research any word you are not familiar with. The key thing to remember is that vegan cheese does NOT taste like real cheese. If you are expecting that, you will be disapointed. So go in expecting to find something possibly tasty and usually edible, but not tasting like cheese. good luck!

Hi, I suspect there will be no satisfactory 'vegan cheese' and don't believe there should be. Cheese is a product made from animal milk and is a favourite in thousands of varieties throughout the world. People who choose a vegan lifestyle eshew the use of any food of animal origin, including milk, eggs and so on. This is their choice and they are right to make it if that is what they want. I believe that trying to recreate a foodstuff of animal origin (cheese) by artificial means is proclaiming they haven't been fully willing to accept their own teachings and beliefs. I feel the same way about vegetarians who despise meat but then make meals to look as much like meat as possible (nut cutlets, minced soya products looking exactly like minced meat, etc.) If you choose a vegan lifestyle you should encompass the whole belief- i.e. that using ANY animal product is wrong and that should be your belief entirely. To attempt to recreate the 'missing' foodstuffs by artificial means must be wrong. Either choose the lifestyle or don't choose the lifestyle. Up to you! Either way, Be happy, BobSpain

There are many different brands of vegan "cheese" mostly, your choices are going to be soy "cheese"
I'm not sure where you live but any health food store, Whole Foods Grocery, etc. will have soy cheese.

Oh! On a side note: Watch out for whey...not vegan.

Simple answer: no. Vegan-cheese is an oxymoron. I could make a block of mud into a wedge like cheese, but it isn't cheese any more than whatever that processed soy stuff is.

Yes, there is. I'm not sure where you are but I live in Australia and there are vegan cheeses in all the major supermarkets.

What foods are you missing cheese on?
I used to LOVE cheese. Extra cheese on everything was my m.o.
I tried a few vegan brands when i first gave up dairy, but now, just a handful of months later, I don't even bother with it, really. Occasionally I'll make a burger with Tofutti's cheese slices because those are pretty tasty, but otherwise I just skip it.
I have learned to love bean burritos, pizza, pasta, even quesadillas WITHOUT CHEESE. Okay, by definition, quesadillas cant' really be made without cheese, but now I just have a tortilla heated up with a thin layer of beans on it and dip it in salsa...yum!
I couldn't eat cheese now. No way. It just seems gross to me. Greasy solidifed animal body secretions!!!
Ew.

Yes, there are quite few. Redwood does several, there is also Sheese, Veggi-Cheese, Pural does some too, and so does Toffuti. Have a look in your local organic store.

Go vegan!

they have cream cheese, nacho cheese, sour cream, and cheddar cheese and they are all made out of cashews not soy.
i'm not sure if it's completely vegan, but almond cheese is really good.
