Some do it for health or weight loss. Ironicly if not done right you will NOT lose weight being vegetarian! In fact I have seen many people gain weight becoming vegetarian because they started eating too many carbs and not enough protein. I have seen plenty of people lose a lot of weight by eating a lot of chicken and fish. You can be as "pure" a vegetarian as you want and the fact remains if you take in more calories than you burn (no matter the source!) you won't lose weight!

The health argument is controvesial. Some say meat is bad for you period while others say being a vegetarian is not healthy because of the lack of iron and protein. The vegetarians say there are lots of plant proteins and the meat eaters say that plant protein is not enough and they we "need" meat.

Don't drag me into this controversy! I am just trying to answer your question! lol!

For others it is Religious Buddhist, Hari Krishnas. some 7th Day Advenist and a fairly large (but not all) number of Hindus.

For some it is an issue of morality. They believe that killing animals for any reason is wrong.

For yet others it is an environmental issue. They say that it takes a lot of plant materials and water to raise animals to eat. Thus the worlds resources are better spent eating the plant material in the first place.

Others believe that humans are not omnivores and that our teeth and stomachs are not designed to eat meat. They say we do not have the same teeth/digestive tract as say a Tiger who is a pure carnivore.

I hope this helps and please keep me away from controversy! lol!

There are many reasons.. usually it's one of the following, or a combination

#1 Health: Recent science shows that the human body does not need, and cannot even process, the amount of protien that the typical westerner eats. Eating too much protien causes health problems and a cancer epidemic. Also, unlike past centuries, the animals are kept in unhealthful conditions, fed the wrong kind of food, pumped full of hormones, etc.. which causes the animals to be diseased, making their meat practically unsafe to eat.

#2. Humane reasons.. While some people oppose the killing of animals completely, many, many people are becoming aware of and horrified by the incredible torturous conditions in which meat animals are kept. THey are repulsed at the incredibly inhumane way that meat is produced.

#3. The environment.. It has been proven that beef is one of the most innefficient food sources.. It takes WAYmore resources to produce a pound of beef than it takes to produce a pound of grain. Most forrests are being cut down for farmland... not to grow plant products for people, but to feed the gazillions of cows that are requried to satisfy our taste for big-macs.. A minute fraction of this land is all that would be needed to feed us all, if we used it to grow grains to be eaten directly by us.

#4.. It's cool... Vegetarianism is the new vogue.. "All the Cool kids are doing it" Just check a list of celebrities that are vegetarian... stupid reason to be one, but it's probably some people's only reason

My reasons are 1-3. Became vegetarian before it wsa cool. LOL..

There are alot of reasons. Some people choose to do it for health (Healthy BMI, low cholesterol, low blood pressure, healthy digestion, better stamina etc.) Some people choose to do it for humanitarian reasons, envrionmental, or religious reasons.

I personally like the variety. I haven't had the same meal twice. My health has also improved dramatically. My appearance is better (hair, skin, and nails).

I also understand that some people need meat (people in alaska can't really grow crops), and that doesn't bother me. What does bother me is the amount of grain livestock require to be butchered. They consume alot more food than the food they give. So basically, in the U.S., we have more cattle consuming way more food than they give off so some people can have 4 meat patties on their sandwich. That bothers me the most considering some people are starving.

Also, if you look at the government's food pyramid, the part that includes meat also includes dry beans. So you could eat meat or dry beans. You don't HAVE to eat meat. Beans are a major part of meat replacement for vegetarians.

Lots of people have lots of different reasons for it. Personally, I am one because I've seen all of the different awful ways that factories abuse the animals to produce food. I realize that humans are ment to eat meat, but I think completely controlling, abusing, and torturing the animals to produce food is wrong. (Consider fast food resturants and KFC for example).

Many people also become vegetarian or vegan because it helps the environment and reduces polition. Others do it because it has been found to be a very healthy diet. There are many different answers.

The same reason some people eat meat... because it's a choice. Some are vegetarians for health reasons. Some are vegetarians for animal rights reasons. Some just because. Some may have other reasons. Nothing beyond the obvious I don't think and nothing terribly unusual.

Religious or personal reasons.

Some people don't eat meat at the order of a doctor due to kidney disease or something else.

The animals are treated horrifically.

They want to become healthier and raise their families to be healthy.

They're concerned with the environmental impact of the meat industries.

Some people are because the are FAT and are trying to lose weight.

Some people are cause that hate seeing animals killed.

some are because they were raised that way.

some are because they want to fit in with a group.

some don't like the taste of meat.

some are a combination of any of these.

The same reason why people want to get into other people's buisness, like Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.
