I wouldn't think so, yet I see it all the time. It seems that a bump or a swerve could cause the dog to fall out, especially going down the highway at 80 mph.
Are there any unenforced laws currently on the books, or is there really not that much a danger?

I've never seen a child ride in the bed of a pickup truck. But I live in Montana, so I don't doubt at all that it happens.

Think about it.....put yourself in the bed of a pick up truck no way to hold onto anything...you driver is going like 70 miles an hour hit's a depression/bump in the the road.... you get the sensation your floating in air and your flying....remeber no seat belt or anthing holding you in place your now airborne and then......SMASH you blood splatered remains are scattered over a 100 yard area crows start eating your dead body.....your driver is safe in the cab of the truck still doing 70 miles an hour Rolling down the Highway with the tunes cranked.....not even know you flew away and splatteed all over the Highway a 100 miles back.......
Law or No Law would you like to be splattered all over the Highway........
Get a Jekkenl that can be mounted to the bed of your pick up....don't use a rope all you will find is the collar covered in blood as the dog was dragged along at 70 miles an hour for the last 200miles when you drive back the next day you see this long bright red streak on the black top thats your dog on ashphalt duuuuude.....

No, absolutely not.
Unfortunately, there are still plenty of idiot people out there who put their dog in the back of a pickup truck - or just as bad, their children. With no kind of restraint to keep them safe should the truck suddenly swerve or hit a bump.
Most places *do* have laws on the books against this, but unfortunately they are often not enforced. If you see a dog loose in a truck bed, REPORT IT. Give the operator the license plate number of the vehicle. It's really the only thing you can do.

Here in Mississippi, not only is it legal for a dog to ride back there, people can too in some areas. Trucks are considered farm equipment. I don't think you can do it on the interstate or anything like that though.

It isn't legal in most states, but most police officers must ignore the violations. If a dog jumps out of a pickup bed on a roadway and an accident occurs, the dog owner is liable for all damages regardless of who hits who.
The safest place for a dog to ride is inside a vehicle with a safety harness on, just like a child. If that is not possible, then a tether in the pickup bed is legal, and is best if the tether is short enough that the dog can't be "hung" off the side of the truck by the neck if he tries to leap out.

I don't believe that any dog should be in the back of a truck unless they're in a cage.. so the cage won't slide around in the back I believe it would be a great idea to bungee strap the cage in place. I don't see anything wrong with a dog being outside a cage in the bed of the truck if you're on your farm or something going a really slow speed. I've done it before hasn't caused any problems with the dog wanting to jump out. Every dog is different though. Some dogs don't jump out and other dogs will.

I was in a horrific accident that ended in a rollover. I was ejected but the driver was killed. The dog was in the bed of the truck when we crashed. I think it suffered a broken leg. Another time a dog jumped out of a truck going by our house at 75 mph. The dog slid about 100 yards and there was blood everywhere. IT was horrible. So, dont let the dog ride in the back, it's not safe.

NO NO NO! I grew up in the country, and you see this all the time. You also see dogs jump OUT of the trucks because they see something along the roads. Sometimes the dogs are fine. More often than not they end up seriously injured and sometimes ran over.
Even if they are tied to the bed of the truck, if the rope is too long they can hang themselves. This is the worst, and I hope I never have to see another hung dog in my life.

most people will tell you it's ok..but it's not unless they are tied down in some way.You have to think dogs have a instinct to jump for other dogs or anything they think is interesting..ex there was this dog in the back of a truck..I was on my motor cycle and i was 20 at the time..I went by the truck ..next thing i knew the dog jumped out after my bike..that should answer your question especially if you love your dog..

No they are not safe! This woman, which I am ashamed to know, let her teenager take their golden retriever for a ride in the bed of a truck. Well the kid tied the dog up in the bed. When he was returning home the dog got excited when he saw the woman in the front yard and jumped out of the truck and got run over repeatedly because he was hanging in front of the back tire. Then, to make matters worse, they never took the dog to the vet. They just abandoned it in the middle of Phoenix. Thankfully a rescue league picked the dog up. He had to have both front legs amputated....

I believe many states have a law against that now, both for the protection of the dog, and the protection of the general public.
It is incomprehensible to me that any owner would think the back of a truck is a safe place for their dog.
