It would be useful as a way to introduce
no meat meals to children whose parents may not know how to cook such food. Tofu and beans aren't alien substances from an evil parallel universe.

In my experience, school lunches are low quality food that is fit for dogs, not children, in general. Ever wonder why so many young adults are obese? Maybe the crud in school lunch makes kids prone to becoming fat, not just fast food at home.

Fresh fruits and vegetables should be available to children at school and at home.
Fresh foods should be the basis of everyone's diet, now that so many good foods are available.

Because they can't afford to cater to dietary minorities. They would have to have diabetic lunches, kosher lunches, gluten-free lunches, allergy free lunches (which would be 100+ varieties in itself), halal lunches, etc..... I'm not really arguing against though. I'm just saying that it isn't feasible. Most schools are woefully short on $$$ and could better use the $$$ they have than to offer a menu to a group that consists of 2% of the population. (U.S.) Schools should have a salad bar. While I realize it isn't haute cuisine, it is however an opportunity for ALL to eat healthy raw vegetables if they choose. It doesn't need to be a super deluxe salad bar, but a nice variety of healthy, raw, vegetable items would be beneficial to everyone.

Absolutely. They should offer some simple vegan choices. Not even for vegans alone but for there to be some healthier food choices for ALL of the kids.

My *middle school had a baked potato bar and you could definately make a vegan lunch from that. Sure some of the toppings were things like sour cream, diced ham, etc... but they also offered things like salsa, sunflower seeds, broccolli, italian dressing...yeah. It was pretty good stuff for school food.

(*public school)

Public schools should offer vegetarian alternatives because there are a lot of vegetarians out there (I am one) but realistically speaking, vegan is harder to cater because organic fruit or vegetables are more expensive than meat (however if you're at a university/college, they should be meeting your needs). Many schools, especially mine, would rather spend the tax money they receive on education (which is where it should be going) rather than the food, so I say bring your own lunch so you can eat what you want to. Making your own is actually cheaper anyway.

Yes, or at least options. Like not having meat in anything other than that "meat meal". I was vegan in high school and it is tough... I couldn't get a salad without cheese or meat. Everyone has their preference and that should be respected.

I should say yes. I believe most of them do. They are not allowed to season vegetables with meat products or by products for health reasons. I would hope that a vegan student would choose nutritious meal items when they enter the cafeteria.

Well, it would be nice if public schools fed our children healthy food. If they're feeding them anything other than a vegan lunch or breakfast then it's not as healthy as it could be, is it?

I think they should offer vegetarian alternatives. But maybe people should bring their own lunches. It would be very difficult to cater to every diet there is out there, especially for schools that are already short on resources.

Yes because Vegans have a right to eat something in a cafeteria.
