Are there any published statistics concerning the effectiveness of law enforcement monitoring of chat rooms? How many actual 14 yo youths are "picked" up by 14 yo old cops? Why is pretending to be a 16 yo a crime and not just an act of fiction writing?

No one has actually answered the question: Or perhaps it was poorly asked: But question is where mayone find some statistics on law enforcement monitoring: The thinking is: In a chat room are a number of people: Let's say there are 100 people in the room: Let's say that there are 30 female names and 70 male or mixed names. Let's say that of 100 4 are "law enforcement". The web site purports to be for people 12 - 17. Let's say that 50% are not within this age range. On the whole --- 30 girls are chatting with 70 males --- so a 10 yo girl(G) -- speaks with a 30 yo LEO. G chats with LEO(playing an 15). They meet --- Is this a crime? G lied about age, so did LEO. G wrote sexually to LEO, LEO replied to ensnare. Who is guilty of what? Even by the cite that the first replie offer --- this is a very rare crime -- most are done by family. What if Female LEO (16) ensnared Male LEO(16) --- what happens?

You may have this misconception of what law enforcement does when monitoring "youthful" chat.

There are thousands of sick adult people attempting every day to find young girls or boys (minors) for sexual purposes.

Law enforcement does their best to find sexual predators who attempt to lure unsuspecting victims!

Of course they are. If you are not doing anything they will not be targeting you........ but anything you type is stored somewhere and if someone wants to get hold of it they can. Obviously there are systems that troll the net and look for key words. To make an extreme example............ say 40 years from now you are running for office. One screen shot or a saved IM and you would be done. A posting just from a teenager saying "they would kill" and it could come back. I think that these are the days when people are feeling innocent with the net. It won't be long before people realize that the thing typed is forever. You may say as you will but years from now...... I am betting anybody and everybody will be slapped down by something even IMed when say 15.

"...14 yo youths are "picked" up by 14 yo old cops? "
Huh?

As for the pretending to be a 16 year old... It isn't the pretending. It is the exchange of sexually explicit dialog with a person that YOU believe to be 16. That is where the criminality attaches.
Any sexually explicit dialog, sending of sexually explicit material including photos, stories, or video files across the internet, or sexually explicit telephone calls with any person that you believe is under the age of majority is violating the law.

I think that it is too early for statistics to be viable for this type of crime. That, and the obvious anonymity of the internet will make compiling those stats severely difficult.
