Plastics are wonderful material. Even for landfilling to avoid leaching, plastics are used. Without plastics, the world economy will collapse as there are no alternatives. Plastic materials are widely used in automotives, aeroplanes, electronics and computers, office stationaries, TV, washing machines, telephones, handphones and a host of thousands of gadgets, appliances and equipments.
When plastics were discovered and applied, no one in the world has come out with a cost-effective solution for waste disposal of plastics. Only now, we have started to realise the negative impacts of plastcis when it is thrown as a waste. Reduction, redcycling and reuse are methods to minimise waste disposal.
As a genuine citizens, we can do our part in house. Nothing more than that. Can you eliminate the use of computers just because computers have plastics components?. Can you now live with mobile phones, just because it contains plastcis?
The people to blame for the environmental disaster owing to the rapid development of plastics are the plastic manufactureres who never gave solution when plastcis become waste and the govet agencies for not developing alternate technologies to conventional plastics (You can get plastics fibres from coconut fibers, you can make disposal plates from palm fibres). No one in the industry, academic and govt is looking into long term environmental impacts.
I wish I am given the Presidency to rule this wonderful country and will make India the greenest country in this world.

I think it depends on the application. Plastic shopping bags aren't useful. They cause tons of pollution. Just in the manufacturing process alone they put carbon into the air. This is where using reusable cloth bags is much better. I don't buy bottled water. I filter my own water. Now, sometimes you really can't avoid plastic. How else to package toothpaste and deodorant? I do watch for items that are over packaged and avoid those.

Plastic can be a source of pollution if burned. When burned, plastic releases CFC's into the atmosphere. CFC's damage the ozone layer. Plastic can also release CFC's when left in an open landfill for a long time.

Totally useful!! I have carpeting in my home made from recycled plastic bags and milk cartons, it has the look and feel of real carpet and it doesn't stain, drop red kool aid on it and just blot. Its great when you have pets and kids.
All the carpet manufacturers are making this stuff I can't remember the code for it but call a carpet dealer and they will know. The price is comparable to regular wool carpeting.
On top of that it makes hospital totally hygenic using clean plastic stuff than have to washed in tons of hot water to sterlize and drying time that is wasting energy for sure!

something derived from petroleum (plastics e.g.) or different organic factors (aluminum) is going to burn up that source. The refining technique itself pollutes - ever been around an oil refinery? Then we manage those issues as a disposible throwing untold quantities of aluminum packaging and foil into landfills and riding gas guzzling autos as though there have been no end to petroleum reserves. an excellent style of the stuff in landfills is packaging fabric from all those client products that shall we purchase devoid of the packaging. image a worldwide wherein we take our very own reusable bins to the save and top off on shampoo, liquids, rice, beans, even quickly nutrition. particularly each time we've a meal it is composed of way too plenty throw-out fabric

Plastic has a lot of advantages for modern living, but minimizing your use of it is best. As others have said, try to not use plastic grocery bags. That's one of the most easily avoided kinds of plastic.

Recyclable plastics are very useful. That means you do not have to use something else to do the job. They provide sanitary, light weight, break resistant and reliable containers. There are also many medical uses. There are only so many products that can be properly sterilized and sealed.
