HI, BBQ's are always fun no matter what time of year!
Good foods might be:
Shrimp and Chicken kabobs
ribs, pork and beef just in case someone is sensitive to one or the other.
Make a fruit salad from a carved watermelon and fill with fruits
Mac-n-cheese (home made) big hit!!
Salad, with at least 3 types of dressing available.
Potato Salad
hamburgers and hot dogs (mainly if kids are going to be there)
If there are fish lovers you can smoke some salmon on the Grill YUMMY!!
Corn on the cob cooked on the grill
and of course the desserts!!
Chips/ dips etc.
The great thing about BBQ's you don't have to make it all yourself ask everyone to bring a plate and note what they are bringing so it is all covered ,off course the BBQ'ed food will need to be done by y'all at your home!!
Have some music, offer alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. like wine, beer, spiked lemonades, sodas, and more!!
You could get you a couple hay stacks and have a marshmallow roast at the end or make smores!! All fun (especially if your buzzing lol)
Good luck hope I have helped some!!

You can still make plenty on the grill in Oct. Ask him what he wants for the main dish. In the fall when people are wanting something a little more hearty to eat, I have something that you can still cook on the grill, but is VERY hearty. Not sure how many people you may have coming, but you will get the idea.
Cut up some potatoes......any type, but the red potatoes seem to cook a little better. Make sure you cut them up small so the cook all the way through on the grill. 1/2" to 3/4" leave skin on. (Wash potatoes first)
Cut up some onion about the same size or if you know how to julienne them that is best. Red onion works very well as it gets very sweet when you cook it.
You could also use some Bell Peppers in there, but it is an option. (any color works, looks cool if you use different colors)
Place the potatoes, onions, (peppers) in the center of the sheet of aluminum foil.
Season with salt, black pepper, parsley, and garlic powder.
Using butter/margerine place roughly a 1/2 cup of butter/margerine in portions on top of the potatoes/peppers/onions. (It melts anyway so it doesn't really matter, and you can use more butter/margerine if you want)
Cover with another sheet of aluminum foil. Fold over the edges to basically make a pouch for the food.
If cooking on the grill, cook on each side for about 15mins.
If cooking in the oven, cook at 375-400 for roughly a half an hour.
You can serve it right out of the pouch. (no dishes) or put it in a bowl or on a serving platter.
ENJOY!!!!!

As far as what to serve we here in Cleveland LOVE clambakes in the fall. You can either have it Catered (not recommended) or due it yourself. A typical bake consists of 1 dozen clams. A Chicken breast, corn on the e cob, baked potato or sweet potato.
Now what happens, is that it all goes into a steamer. The chicken is removed after about 45 min. then BBQ'd. I am sure you can find step by step instructions on the web here. I am not going to go into all the details.
As far as what to do, Again here in the Midwest there is a game called cornhole (i know sounds funny) but it is a lot of fun. Check out www. cornholeplayers.net for info. Have Fun!!!!

Your food ideas sound great! If it gets really cool out, you could always throw a pot of chili on the barbeque along with the hotdogs and burgers. As for activities - hold a Frisknock tourney! It's always a blast. The rules can be found at the link I have posted below.

All your ideas for foods are perfect. Go with them! As for what to do, play music, guitar, radio, cd's. Horseshoes, badminton, lawn darts, toss up (try to keep beach ball in air) are all good ideas. Remember the neighbours though. Respect other persons' rights and property.

Maybe you could find some games... horse shoes, a game of football or volleyball... if the guests tend to get drunk, they'll be a lot easier to entertain ^_^... good luck!

A BBQ is not complete without ribs. Plus, if it gets too cold, they can be finished in the oven.
