I just cleaned out our fridge at work because something someone left in there leaked all over the place, including in the bottom drawer I use. I tossed items that expired weeks ago, months ago and even last year, as well as leftovers that had stuff growing on them. We are trying to come up with some rules on fridge use like no plastic bags, everything will be tossed on Friday afternoons, name and date are required on all items.
What fridge rules do you have at work? Do they work? Who is responsible for enforcing them? What rules would you like to have regarding fridge use at your workplace?

Anything put in the fridge at work must be labeled with the food owner's name....or it can be tossed by the boss. And, the boss does do some tossing.
If an item leaked out in our fridge, as happened in your workplace, the owner of that item would be responsible for cleaning it up, and no one should be hesitant in bringing the spill to that person's attention....and in turn...that person should not be hesitant in cleaning it up. If this became an issue, I feel it is worthy of noting in the employee's file, and brought up in his/her regular scheduled review. It goes toward work ethic and benefiting the group dynamic.
The rule about emptying the fridge on Fridays sounds like a good one. Assigning some one to be the "fridge police"? The supervisor should assign someone or do the duty him/her self, perhaps. In our studio.....the cleaning lady actually "cleans" the fridge, but we are all responsible for our food items and any messes they might make.

At my work, the frig is cleaned every Sunday. We have a list
of rules posted, such as:
* any open containers will be removed due to spillage
* all containers, bags must be marked with name & date
* items must be removed by midnight Saturday
These rules are enforced by assigned person who has this
daily duty weekly. There been times where employees forgot
to take their container(s) home but too bad.

No written rules, except that it gets cleaned out once a month and everything left in it gets tossed! Yes, even your mother's favorite baking dish. If you leave it, it's trash!
As for the other stuff, you might want to put your name on your milk or coffee creamer. Oh, and it's gross, but this one woman puts her breast milk in there. Yuck!

i went through this same thing... one day i just couldn't stand it anymore, so I cleaned it out, ewwww! But after that I posted a sign on the refrigerator, no cardboard, (gets soggy) no plastic bags, everything must be labeled with your name... and every friday we took turns cleaning it out. Our HR manager made a schedule and we all had to take turns. Once we cleaned it out and got on a schedule, it wasn't bad at all.. it only took a few minutes...

we clean out every friday afternoon. if it is expired or doesn't have a name on it, out it goes. also we know not to bring good dishes to work because the dish and all goes in the trash. we do leave ketchup, dressings, and other condiments in until the expiration date is reached. however they are normally used up before.
