Any type of dried bean is going to be really cheap. One bag can make several days of meals. I love to cook kidney or red beans in the crock pot with an onion, some garlic and chili powder. Once cooked you can eat as they are or use to make different things. I like them in a bowl with a little cheese.
Beans are a great food, protien, complex carbs. Some call beans the 'perfect' food.

i'm a broke vegetarian, splurge when i can on amys meals and lots of veggies. the important thing is to eat what you like within a reasonable price range. try buying tofu, tomatoes, rice, onions, peppers, etc.... and making a huge stir fry...this meal will last you a week. everytime i cook it lasts me a long time.

Make sauces for pasta from tomatoes and other vegetables. Make loads in one go and freeze the sauce that you don't use in individual portions. You can eat pasta and healthy sauces for about 50p/$1 a meal maximum and there are loads of pasta sauce recipes online.

If you're in the UK, jacket poatatoes with cheddar cheese and baked beans are cheap and really filling.

I agree. Ramen Noodles are the best because they are wicked cheap and can account for a full meal. I love them too and I'm not broke so they are pretty much just gooood.

Whatever vegetable they're serving at the shelter.

Do you people know what "broke" means? It means no $$$. How shall this person procure all of the items you've suggested? The 5 finger discount?

I've lived on cornflakes, tinned tomatoes, pasta and baked beans, maybe the odd potato every now and again.

Wow. Broke and a vegetarian? You don't have a lot going for you. Are you homeless too? Try some dumpster diving. You can find some food and have a place to sleep also.
