Genital warts need to be removed with prescription medication or by the doctor. Medication like Compound W is ONLY intended for warts on the hands, feet, elbows, knees, etc. It is NOT intended for the genital area. The genital area is a very sensitive area and these medications are too strong. They can actually cause 2nd and 3rd degree burns if not used correctly.
Every person is different. What works well for some, may not work well for others.
A doctor can prescribe a cream that the person can use at their convenience and at their home. Aldara cream and Condylox cream are available with a prescription.
If these creams don't work or the doctor doesn't want to try them, the doctor might suggest applying medication at the office. This is done by the doctor, is done in several visits and can be pretty expensive. Some of the medications that can be used include: Podophyllin resin (Podofin), Intralesional (injected into wart lesion) interferon, Fluorouracil (Efudex, Fluoroplex), and Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or bichloroacetic acid (BCA).
A person can also have surgery to remove genital warts by freezing (cryosurgery), burning (electrocautery), or laser treatment. Surgery is occasionally used to remove large warts that have not responded to other treatment.
Although treatments can get rid of the warts, they do not get rid of HPV, so warts can recur after treatment. The body's immune system typically clears the virus anywhere from 8 to 13 months, but it occasionally remains in the body for a lifetime.
Take care!

NEVER use OTC meds on genital warts. There is a prescription medication (Aldara) you can get from the doctor that can get rid of them (usually) but once you have the virus that causes warts they may reappear at any time.
Aldara can also be used for really, really, stubborn non-genital warts as well, but you can't do the reverse - use treatments for non-genital warts on genital warts and expect good things to happen.

sorry over the counter meds won't cut it. You need Aldara ( a cream) which needs a script or you need to have them frozen or burnt off by a doctor. Don't panic 80% of people in the 18-35 age group have HPV which is the virus which causes warts. it is the most widely spread of STD's. for males it's just a few bumps with no real side effects. for chicks it can be a precursor to cervical cancer. the best analogy is that it is like chicken pox. once you get them and get rid of them you are no longer contagious but you will always have the virus in your system. You are not likely to get them back again as you have a built up immunity. however if you are ill for a while it may strike while your defences are down like shingles. that said there are more than 100 stains of HPV (4 of which can cause cancer) so you may only have immunity to one strain. Also condoms don't cut it if you or your partner have warts that is not covered by the condom. ie in your pubic hair. so sex is always a risk. hope this helps. any other info req feel free to email or IM me.
PS> paramedic girl obviously has no clue she doesn't even have the right STD

genital warts are not the same kind of warts that over the counter medications can treat. those are caused by a fungus. genital warts is a type of STD (sexually transmitted disease) and can only be properly treated by a physician.
there is evidence that this same disease can cause, or be a precursor to, cervical cancer and other serious problems. i strongly encourage you, or whomever you are asking for, to seek a physician's help immediately. good luck!
