I am continually irritated when I buy leaf lettuce (never iceberg), knowing that in two or three days spots of black slime will appear and spead and that before I use even a fourth of it I will have to throw it out and buy another.

I wish to either know how to combat the black slime or that someone would invent a small head of lettuce that could be eaten before the black slime appears.

talk to your local Tupperware salesperson, they have a very good container with vents in it and a chart for how many vents to open for each different kind of produce. It at least doubles the life of your produce.

The most important thing to do is remove it from the store bag, which is usually cellophane or plastic.
Rinse it quickly by running cold water into the center. Turn upside down and gently shake off the excess. Wrap the lettuce in 2-3 paper towels and place inside a ziploc bag. Leave the bag open and place it in the bottom crisper drawer. This allows the leaves to dry out but retain their moisture. Make sure your controls are set correctly.

With this method, my leaf lettuces usually last 7-10 days. Some alternatives below.

Wrap it in dry paper towling and store it in a plastic bag, loosely closed.

With any leafy greens, including herbs, the paper towel absorbs extra moisture so the leaves don't rot against the plastic. They help the greens retain moisture without being wet against the plastic

I do this all the time and have never needed to buy special bags.

no one invented a small head of lettuce, but there is a small device you put in the fridge for just that reason. Do a search for minimate.

it will extend the life of all your produce and make what you eat more healthy as there are fewer microbs on it, plus it saves you money!

It's too cold! Turn your fridge down a notch or move it away from the fan. I buy hearts of romaine and it lasts over a week in the fridge.

It's a bit of an expense at first, but the vac bags really keep that from happening. Darn air!
