It started 10 months ago. Coughing all day long with mucus being expelled each time. These 'attacks' lasted 2 mins to 15 mins which often resulted in me vomiting and bladder weakness. My noise streams like a tap at the same time as well. I have found dry, crumbly or spicy food aggravate my cough. Or hot environments. I got some relief from sipping water and blowing my nose but suffered sleepless nights and coughed so much I couldnt leave the house! My doc gave me antibiotics did nothing. Then tried me on a rescue inhaler. I found at first this had no affect then it helped ease my coughing spells as soon as they started. Since then I have been refered to a chest clinic at my local hospital. I am now on the rescue inhaler, a steroid combo inhaler 2x a day, nasal spray, antihistomines and singulair tabs. This combo has improved my symptoms by about 50% but I am still getting the coughing attacks on and off throughout the week. Does this sound like asthma, even with no typical wheezing??

Tara - Yes the post nasal drip is a real problem for me. I am constantly blowing my nose when these coughing fits starts and it does help to relieve it in some way. My throat itches a lot as well and I find my voice sometimes goes and I have to clear it a lot (maybe the meds) I have also used a nasal wash and found I can at least get a good nights sleep..no more 5am wakeups! Only problem is the solution I use for that is very expensive and not available on prescription!
My Doc gave me two seperate but continuous courses of antibiotics when I first told him of my symptoms. Would these have not shifted any sinus infection??
I have improved a lot since meds were started but still get these coughing fits. Some days I will be fine, others I just dont feel like leaving my house!
Also like you Tara when I had a cold my symptoms became severe. The vomiting from coughing came back & I developed a slight wheeze that I could hear while lying down. Thats the only time I have ever wheezed...

To me, it sounds like a combo of asthma and a very stubborn sinus infection. When I have an asthma attack, I usually cough uncontrollably for several minutes, so it is possible that you're having an attack when you have these episodes. I also have very bad post nasal drip, so when I have a cold or sinus infection my asthma gets very bad, and it's very hard to get control of it once an infection starts.

Good luck!

I'm not a respiratory specialist, but I have done lots of respiratory clinics in the past.

It sounds like possibly a couple of things:

Cough-variant asthma (which basically is when the dominant symptom is coughing fits rather than wheeze, often worse at night and following exertion....which seems to be the case for you).

Chronic periennial rhinitis (basically chronically inflammed/congested sinuses).

Nasal polyps are also a possibility, and can be classically associated with asthma (get your doctor to have a look up your nose).

The fact that your symptoms have improved with your current therapy is really reassuring. Things must have been pretty bad if you were given singulair....it can be really helpful both for the classical asthmatic symptoms and both the nasal and cough-variant ones.

It is worth charting your peak flow (even if you are not wheezy) just to look for variablity (morning/night). If there is still variability, then your inhalers might need optimised.

Failing all of that, I think a specialist respiratory opinion would be warranted. They have physiotherapy input which can really help control coughing fits by teaching you breathing techniques and would be able to do more specialist testing.

Best of luck....

I feel your pain. I've had asthma for 14 years now and have seen several doctors. The truth is, there is no known cure for asthma at the moment. But the symptoms can be prevented. It really depends on what causes your brother's asthma. Mine is usually dust and hot weather. But I think the universal method is using the control inhaler.

I cured my Asthma the natural way?

You can have asthma without having a wheeze. I have it (without wheeze). It can be dangerous as during an attack some doctors fail to realise it is asthma.

As the medications you are on is helping your symptoms that too indicates asthma. Keep taking your medications, and whenever possible, have your flu jab! (I have one every year and I've not had flu since starting with the vaccines)

Here is a direct quote from a Primary Care Website for Doctors:

"Absence of wheezing does not rule out asthma.

A wheeze is the musical sound produced by air flowing through a narrowed airway. Wheezing is a common feature of an asthma exacerbation and is often audible with, and sometimes even without, a stethoscope. However, airflow limitation due to airway narrowing does not always produce an audible wheeze."

Hope this answers your question.

Wow. That's nasty. Not being a doctor, I can't diagnose what you've got but it doesn't sound like you've just got asthma by itself. It's like you've developed an allergy to something and the asthma-like symptoms are just one of the reactions to it. As an aside, wheezing doesn't necessarily have to be part of asthma. I'm asthmatic and I don't always wheeze but I always get that tightness in the chest like someone's crushing me.

Have you tried to find out what's causing all your trouble? The drugs you've been prescribed are suppressing the symptoms to a certain extent but perhaps there are factors in your environment which are driving your system into overdrive.

I'd also suggest going elsewhere for a second opinion or to a specialist. It would be horrible to think you're suffering in this way if it can be helped.

i've got self belief your soreness. i've got had bronchial asthma for 14 years now and function considered quite a few medical doctors. the fact is, there is not any time-venerated treatment for bronchial asthma on the 2nd. however the indications could be prevented. It quite relies upon on what motives your brother's bronchial asthma. Mine is frequently airborne dirt and dust and warm climate. yet i think of the widely used approach is utilising the administration inhaler. I cured my bronchial asthma the organic way?
