what are some good japanese dishes (recipes/links/etc/) ?(not sushi). My older sister is comming home from college next weekend and is really into japanese culture and I would like to make her something japanese but, I have no idea what I should make, she hates sushi (even though I love it) anywho , im a good cook and know alot about cooking, so suggestions , recipes and such please =3

There are a lot of good Japanese dishes that make up Japanese home cooking.

Croquettes are really popular in Japan -- they are basically mashed potatoes with seasoned hamburger, which are dipped in egg and flour and Japanese breadcrumbs (panko). Look up "korokke" to find a recipe.

Serve with thinly sliced cucumbers in a marinade of sake, vinegar, salt and sugar to taste. Steamed broccoli would also be good.

Simple fried salmon is also a great dish this time of year. Serve with grated Daikon Radish.

The important thing is the rice, and the miso soup. As long as you have those two things, you have a Japanese meal.

I would try Yakisoba, its very simple

Heat a pan and add some veggies like cabbage carrots green peppers onions, soften them, kinda stirfry style, then add in Soba noodles, and the sauce that comes with the noddles, its very nummy.

Okazu- Stir fried veggies with chicken ham or beef, served with white rice.

Yaki -tori is chicken or beef on a stick thats grilled and basted with a sweet soy based sauce.

Tempura is popular it can be seafood or veggies that is deepfried. Some popular kinds are shrimp, sweet potato onions squash.


Tofu is used often in stir frys.

i recommend Croquette or Karaage ( japanese fried chicken)

Croquette...

cook ground beef and chopped onion & carrots and sweet corns. add salt and pepper.
make mashed potatoes ( add some milk for smooth texture)
mix them in a bowl season them with salt and pepper.
make flat and oval-shaped pieces.
coat each piece with flour.
dip in beaten egg.
coat with panko. Fry in 350 F oil until brown.

(panko = bread crums you can but it at oriental grocery store)

japanese fried chicken

cut chicken and put them in a bowl.
add salt and pepper, grated garlic and ginger juice, sake and soy sauce.
leave it for 1 hour
drain the liquid, and add flour on each pieces.
deep fry them untill golden brown.

japanese curry is good too.
just go to an oriental grocery store and buy a box of curry mix.
