YES! I could not believe it either, and I used to teach sex education about 15 years ago. I was a commander in the Army a couple of years ago, so I got the STD stats from the units every now and then from the docs, and I was shocked. I swear that I wanted to start wearing a chastity belt.
The thing is that so many people don't recognize the symptoms of herpes right away. Sometimes the infection is so mild that it goes unnoticed, but the bigger problem is that it leaves an open lesion for a while which allows other bacteria and viruses to enter, so people with herpes become more apt to catch more STDs when they have open lesions (sores), and of course they can pass it on. Also, the lesions can be found in places that a condom does not protect. BE CAREFUL!

Yes, it's estimated about 1 in 4 women and 1 in 5 men have genital herpes (according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention). A lot of people don't even know they have the virus. So, one of your friends, or someone you know, may have it and just not realize it.
And, just because 1 in 4 people have the virus doesn't mean it necessarily affects a group of 4 of your friends. It might not affect any of your friends, but it could affect 2 friends out of another group of 4 people. Supposedly every teenager gets in at least one car accident. My brothers haven't been in any, but I've had 3, so I've basically evened it out. See what I mean?
Also, not everyone is going to tell their friends "I have genital herpes". It's not exactly something to be proud of. I have had the virus for 6+ years. The ONLY people who know I have the virus are my parents (because they were at the doctor when I was diagnosed), my fiance, and my ex-boyfriends. It's basically no one else's business. The way I see it is - if I'm not having sex with you, then you don't need to know.
Take care!
