The correct cooldown is similar to what you were doing. The idea is to reduce oxygen need in the muscles which have had increased blood flow. So it has to be the same or similar, and it is gradual over a 5-10 minute period.

Your heart rate increases to match the demands of the muscles which you are using when you exercise. When you stop the exercising, the heart rate falls back to its normal resting rate.

The cool down exercises are light exercises designed really to stretch the muscles and prevent you from suffering from cramps. It also serves to aid regeneration of any mild damage within the muscles.

The type of cool down exercise you do should take account of the type of exercise - probably the best all-round cool down exercise would be light swimming or perhaps walking.
