Persons with Type I DM formerly called IDDM do not produce an adequate supply of insulin, therefore they have to take insulin inorder to metabolise sugars.
In Type 2 DM formerly called NIDDM the persons are insulin resistant and do not adequately uptake the glucose, therefore diet, exercise and often medications are used to control the blood glucose levels. If these measures are inadequate for control, additional insulin is added to assist in the metabolism of sugars.
The old titles of insulin dependent and non-insulin dependent are not considered appropriate as many persons with type 2 dm are actually insulin dependent due to the severity of their disease.

Very good answers but the one talking about 2 different diseases is wrong, I am type 2 and take insulin. There are a lot of us out here that take it. Why does being type 2 make us any less diabetic? Having said that, will get off the soap box and turn the question back over to the asker.

What the others have said is absolutely correct but I always think the 2 types are almost like 2 different diseases as being insulin dep., as you know, the Pancreas does not produce any or enough insulin and it has to be given to the body bu injection, whereas, people who are not insulin dep.,their pancreas is still making insulin, its just that their body's stopped responding to it so well , so they can take tablets to increase the sensitivity and manage it sometimes just through diet.....(I have been insulin dep diabetic for 17 years-4 injections per day)

Of what I know is, DM type 1 (juvenile diabetes) is usually caused by pacreatic damage of beta cell. Meaning your body cannot produce insulin.
For DM type 2 (late onset diabetes) usually insulin receptors in cells do not respond to insulin leading to the same effects of DM type 1 which is hyperglycemia along side with other relating effects. That why exercise and medications aside from insulin like metformin (for our country I don't know about yours) are taken.
I have a separate question regarding why you give insulin to Non-insulin dependent diabetes. share me your thoughts.

Many common natural remedies are claimed to have blood sugar lowering properties that make them useful for people with or at high risk of diabetes. Learn here https://tr.im/2Wm3f
A number of clinical studies have been carried out in recent years that show potential links between herbal therapies and improved blood glucose control, which has led to an increase in people with diabetes using these more 'natural' ingredients to help manage their condition.

IDDM means that the diabetic person is dependant upon injections of insulin to keep the glucose at normal (or near normal) levels. NIDDM means that the person's pancreas is still working and he or she can manage their diabetes with a controlled diet and/or oral medications.
