my boyfriend was diagnosed with croup. they say it usually happens in young children, he's 27 and its getting worse resulting in blood being coughed up and coming out his nose. the doctor did her examination and were doing all we can at the moment to keep it under control.. ive used the vaporiser cos i heard it helped, and was told that keeping his chest and feet warm would help it so it wouldnt get set off. i've checked out info on the net but want to have opinions of others to know exactly what im dealing with..
any help or information means alot,, thanks heaps :)

Croup does not cause bleeding.

Since it has gotten worse, it is 911 time. Get him to an ER immediately.

There are very few things that cause you to cough up blood that are minor.

Please hurry. If he were in the hospital now the doctors would be hurrying.

1) Call your local "ask a nurse" or hospital ER to ask what to do. Depending on his symptoms he may NEED an ER visit or a 911 call.

2) When I used to treat the kids for croup there were 2 effective methods. A) get him into the bathroom and fill the tub with HOT water. See that the window and door are closed so that the whole room is filled with steam. In about 5 min. his breathing should ease, but he should keep his head in the steam for atleast 1/2 hr.
B) Wrap him in a blanket and take him out into the cold. Let him breathe the cold air. This can also bring rapid relief.

Use a humidifier, not a vaporizor. The humidifier puts more moisture directly into the air. My son is asthmatic and gets the croup at least 2 times every year... he's 12, I too thought it was only an infant thing. As for the cough, my son's doc actually gives him a really strong cough syrup and he uses his inhaler while sick quite frequently (we even find that the primateen mist over the counter helps)

With the bleeding, we have never experienced that, so you are best letting your doc decide on that one.

Sure hope he feels better soon!!!!

i had croup as a kid and i had it until i was in my early twenties. it's not nice, and it can be really scary when you can't breathe.

croup is inflammation of the trachea - the fact that he's bleeding probably means that the inflammation is bad.

vaporisers help, as well as a hot steamy room with vicks rubbed on you.

as i got older, i just kinda put up with it. i tried not to cough when i could because it hurt SO MUCH. maybe cough suppressant could help?

While croup in children is usually mild it can be very serious in adults, in fact so much that they need to be hospitalized. You said your boyfriend already went to the doctor, who the way it seems didn't really do anything. Get your boyfriend to the emergency room, he is seriously sick.
