Your friend may be suffering from what's known as exercise induced asthma.(EIA) This particular type of asthma occurs when one is exercising or afterwards. Asthma is a condition in which the bronchi become inflamed causing constriction of the airway thus oxygen cannot be exchanged properly. This constriction is what causes the wheezing sound of an asthmatic. His doctor should be able to prescribe the correct medication to control his asthma whether it be EIA or the more common form. Best of luck to your friend. One other note, EIA occurs only during vigorous activities and shortly after, a common medication for this is Albuterol. Hopefully this is the extent of his asthma. And if it is indeed EIA treatment is extremely effective. If one has to have asthma, this is the one to have.

I Hate the implication that having Asthma makes some one Abnormal.
Asthma is a Respiratory disease, that although no cure with the right Medication can be controlled & enable the Asthmatic to enjoy life like everyone else. only in severe cases can the Asthma take over & prevent someone from carrying out an active life.

Duncan Goodhue Champion Swmmer gold medal winner was an asthmatic, are you going to call him Abnormal?

Asthma is really hyper-reactive airways. This means that the airways are less stable than normal and react by producing cough, due to increased irritability, wheeze due to spasm and mucus due to inflammation. All of these processes can and do occur in non asthmatics, but require more extreme stimulation to happen.

Most asthma is inherited, but some may be triggered by certain occupational contacts like flour, solder or spray paints.

There is currently no cure for asthma, but there are some excellent managements. These consist mainly of relievers like salbutamol and stabilisers usually inhaled steroids.

Difficulty in breathing under certain circumstances, the difficulty being not able to exhale, it's been likened to being able to breath in normally but then exhaling through a drinking straw, very distressful, the sufferer can relieve this with the inhaler that is given under prescription from their GP

asthma is basically a constriction of the bronchioles of the lungs caused by many things eg allergens or increased sensitivity to endogenous neurochemicals.

when the bronchioles constrict it becomes hard to breathe.

You can treat it by using Beta Blockers (beta receptors are a type of adrenaline receptor) such as salbutamol (specific to this type of beta receptor)....most asthmatics have a salbutamol inhaler.

I have a cousin who had this as an infant. Her parents moved her to a different climate and she outgrew the problem by the time she reached adulthood.
