Generally opiates SUPPRESS cough - that's why they sell codeine containing cough syrups by prescription.

If someone's been on opiates for a while and then stops, they can get nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, goosepimples, sweats, and muscle aches. I suppose they can also get an increase in coughing although that's not classically described as part of the opiate withdrawal syndrome.

Maybe the bronchitis-like symptoms you've noted are actually being caused by stopping the opiates suddenly?
