Heart Disease is a very broad term and includes many other diverse conditions that affect the heart. So to think that blocked arteries by plaques comprises the heart disease is not justified.
Since your mention of cholesterol has come up here..it is also implicated in the etiology for clogged vessels. Actually it is the LDL.. or low density lipids that are bad.Cholesterol is a very important substance in the body, a precursor of many chemicals which are vital in the metabolic process of the body.If it levels remain within normal limits, there is safety but not necessarily, while levels above normal definitely carry a high risk.
To get clogged vessels or formation of plaques is dependent on many other factors also.. which includes.exrcise. smoking,
blood pressure, age, diabetes, social set up, alcohol intake, stress, dietry habits and genetic predisposition.
To discuss all these here is impossible...
yes it is better to have cholesterol on the lower side..
How.. I am giving you many links and beside the information from these sites may be good, but they do not replace your doctor.. that is important.. checkups from your doctor and to follow his advice is the basic rule.

Atherosclerotic plaques develop BETWEEN the INNER and OUTTER layers of the arterial wall many times IN PATCHES NOT UNIFORM This observation alone should let the observer know the ILLOGICAL nature fo the FALE Cholesterol Hypothesis.
These atherosclerotic plaques are comprised mainly of very hard fibrous scar tissue and smooth muscle cells. After that Calcium deposits , white blood cells , collagen and yes various fats and cholesterol. Cholesterol and various fats are a SMALL part of the atherosclerotic plaques.
Inflammation and or damage to the structure of the arterial wall starts this process off. Cholesterol is used LAST as re enforcement and not in that great of an amount . On TOP of the fibrous scar tissue.
Cholesterol does NOT cause coronary disease . A therosclerosis is NOT the wads of yellow goo inside of a pipe that the media shows.
Autopsy and angiography/ebt studies have shown no connection between total or LDL cholesterol levels and extent of atherosclerosis.
The Cholesterol Hypothesis has NO sientific basis but is maintained due to POLITICAL, MONETARY and SOCIAL factors.
A few things that are ACTUALLY CAUSAL in coronary artery disease is are severe stress, elevated fasting blood sugar levels

I presume that by "heart disease" you mean coronary artery disease (blocked arteries in the heart). As a previous poster noted, there are many other types of heart disease which aren't related to blocked arteries or cholesterol.
Arteries do get blocked with plaques and there are five major conditions that increase the chances of this happening - high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, and family history (some people inherit genes that make it more likely for them get coronary artery disease). Also, being male is a risk factor for developing coronary artery disease but there isn't much anyone can do about this!
So, it's possible to develop plaques in the arteries without having high cholesterol - especially if one is a male smoker with high blood pressure and diabetes whose father died of heart attack in his 40's.
That being said, cardiologists like to keep the cholesterol level very low in people who've got coronary artery disease - they like to keep it even lower than they do in people without coronary artery disease. Best to ask your family doctor or cardiologist if they recommend cholesterol lowering medications - if your cholesterol is naturally very low, they may just choose to keep an eye on it rather than subjecting you to another medication.

Blood flow to the heart (ischemia) can be caused by several factors. There may be debris floating through the blood, as plaque breaking loose from the wall of the artery. Athersclerosis being the most common cause. Not just the narrowing of the vessel itself.

diabetes, sedentary lifestyle exercise helps create collateral circulation in the heart which maintains blood flow even when one artery is occluded
oclusion leads to ischemia which leads to heart attacks
nicotine is also a big one
cigarettes not only create lung cancer but heart disease-my dad smoked for so long that RJR probably was really sad when he quit; that was the only reason he was in the hospital-everything else about him was great

in my opinion most heart problems are caused by floride, chlorine, pasturized milk we were lead to beleive floride was needed in our toothpaste our water and in many other products, which was and is a BIG LIE, it scars the arteries which cholesterol clings to which causes the blockage, but if people do not have heart problems they can"t make any money, floride was a waste products of which was to toxic to dump anywhere is has no benefit for humans,I suggest you purchase the book natural cures they don"t want you to know about at naturalcures.com.
