Please, NO rude answers.
My dad died of a drug overdose when I was 14 (4 years ago). All my life he was an alcoholic and drug addict. He also seemed to hate God...he tended to curse him. I don't know if he really hated him or if he was just pissed off. Anyway, he wasn't exactly a Christian...I don't ever remember seeing him in a church. He even named our cat after Aleister Crowely (dubbed the wickedest the man in the world). My father was by no means a satanist or anything like that...he probably got the idea to name him Aleister after the Ozzy Osbourne song.
Anyway, a year or so before he died I didn't see much of him. He had moved about an hour and a half away. Every now and then we would get a call from the hospital where he lived that he was there and had been beaten up pretty badly. Not until after his death did I learn some things....he got saved! He got his high school degree (he had dropped out in 10th or 11th grade) and was going to college to become a psychiatrist and he was actually attending church on a regular basis. Of course, he still wasn't perfect...but nobody ever is. He was still messed up, but he was trying to do better! Do you think he made it to heaven? I know it's impossible to know this sort of thing, but I want your opinion.
Once again, no rude answers please. And telling me there isn't a God is even worse...

If people can't go to Heaven until the day of judgement, what do their souls do until then?

Something that personal cannot be answered through scriptural references of other people or opinions including myself. The only way you could know for sure is to ask god yourself through prayer and feel his spirit bear witness to you concerning the matter.
James 1:5
"if any you lack wisdom, let him ask of god, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him."
and by men that means all mankind.
Our savior Jesus Christ will be the judge of all mankind and I know he knows the intents of our hearts and person we really are. The sign that your father was seeking after something before he died is a wonderful blessing and evidence that he was experiencing a change of heart. I believe growing and learning doesnt stop after this life and many more opportunities will be given to us. Have hope, faith, and charity and god will take you in as his own. with love, stetson

Jesus said there are many rooms in his Fathers house. Your dad may not be in Heaven as most writers would portray where we met everyone and are happy and smiling but I do believe he with the Son and protected until judgment day. All the saints will be under the altar of the Lord during the tribulation and they are told to wait so I am sure even the ones that are not saints are waiting but where better to wait than in the Fathers mansion

Sorry to hear about your loss. It doesn't matter if he believed in God (God is above the petty stuff people say in religious books) or not or went to church as religion is man made.
When we die our soul leaves our body (shell) and automatically goes into the spirit world which is solid and like a replica of the earth plane. He would have been met by his relatives that already have been passed over. There is no judgement by anyone in the spirit as we have to go through a life review and judge ourselves. There is no hell or devil.
Please know that your dad is around and would have an idea of what is going on your life. He would be feeling very sorry for what he has put you through. I'm sure his self awarness on the spiritual plane has increased. Your father will be there waiting for you when it is your time to go. Take notice of your dreams incase he wants to vist you in a dream and think thoughts to him when ever you feel the need knowing that he will be able to hear you.

I believe that the Protestant ethos cannot give a satisfactory answer to cases such as this, we all believe in Gods mercy but still there is the fact of His Justice too.
The question is this, if God is infinitely holy and if He cannot abide sin then how do we manage after death to go straight into His holy presence?
The Catholic dogma of Purgatory explains this so well and without this place of purification who would be able to enter into Gods awesome presence?

Your dad is always with and looking out for you, Every time you think or talk about your dad it keeps him alive. Why would he or you ever would want to leave each other. When the inner deep voice inside of you tells if your doing the right or the wrong things throughout your life it's him looking out for you. Be happy you have all the good memories of your dad inside of you for your whole life that keeps him alive.

Feel lucky you had him in your life. I've never even met my father. To answer your question, I don't think he is in hell. And I don't think he is suffering. I am going to recommend a book to you that has more answers than I do. I just read it recently, and found it very comforting. It is called 'When Bad Things Happen To Good People', by Harold Kushner.

you're right, it's impossible to know for sure, but i do know what the scripture says. if your dad accepted Jesus into his heart (and again, noone really knows except him and God), he's there in heaven.
edit- IF they don't go to heaven until judgment day, they sleep until then, and the time passes so fast noone would know the difference.

Ok to the guy above me I want to know where it says we wont recognize anyone in heaven because that is bull.
Any way I say there is a chance. If he ment what he felt and said when he got saved that never goes away no matter how much he ends up dislikeing God. Once saved always saved.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16
If he turned to Jesus, then he is in Heaven. It won't matter that he wasn't perfect, the Blood of Jesus will cover all your dad's sins.

let me not touch the question of beliefs. u want to know where your father is. he is definitely out of stage. all the world is a stage and we are merely actors. your father's role finished and you are still playing your role. the actors do not bother about co stars who have left the stage. i hope this should satisfy u. better take interest in yourself and other living family members, relations and friends instead of pondering over where your late father is.
