He's on meds but he still has the habit of buying things we don't need when we are in debt and don't have enough money for my necessary care and his together.

These aren't huge things like multiple cars and multiple houses, etc. but we are in debt because of the house loan (something that had he saved the money over the years he could have bought a huge house at the amount of money he earns instead of us having this problem now of barely able to meet the bills).
Before we got the house, I talked with him about if I won a million dollars and paid his bills, and he said he would just get more bills. I just felt so frustrated then.
Now I just feel so... discouraged whenever he comes in with something else that we don't need.

Any suggestions? The little things add up.
And the worst part of this for me is that he tells me how much in debt we are and has tried to figure out how to make it to the end of the month and doesn't want me to buy so much groceries (only "what we need"), and then he goes out and buys these things.

How do I take over these things when he does not seem to see his spending on unnecessary items as a problem?
When I talk with him about this and how I feel, he just doesn't seem to get it.

the only way is for him to see his problem and for you to take over finances 100% and put him on a allowance.

when you are manic you don't see the down side of overspending.

See this site (reference below) about bipolar people and excessive spending.

I am bipolar and have suffered from the "spending problem" for years. You need to take over custody of the credit cards, ATM cards etc and he needs to change or increase meds. This is a manic symptom and shows he is not as well as treatment could make him.

Please don't let this continue. The stress is very bad for you both and the consequences will make you both miserable.

For me the solution was lithium and counselling and using daily mood charts and making a treatment contract with my partner.

Sarah m is mostly right but alot of what I spend is when I'm depressed. I guess I think if I have this or that I'll be happy again.
Get the credit and debit cards away from him ASAP
