It works both ways though, some teenagers have no respect or manners, but some do, i brought my children up to respect other people and have good manners, some older people have none at all some are very rude!

I think it works both ways too... I am a bit older than you kid in the 30 and 40's . but as you say kids were taught resoect and manners then, and discipline at home and at school was much stricter. .. There are still lots of polite respectful people about.. I have 3 children and 8 grandchildren... They are all respectful to evertbody It is the upbringing that carries on between generations that is the main reason... I trust my grandkids when they become parents will do the same...I think they will..... All the breakdown in manners, civility honesty and law keeping stem from poor parentage.... If you see louts and yobs, just look at their parents, that tells you why....

Sorry bill dont agree with you i am probably same age as you and yes there are some youngsters who have no manners but ther are some ignorant older people i have held doors open for an old person and they just walk past you no thank you so good and bad in all ages as for smacking bums where does a smack turn into a punch to much violence nowadays i have got 8 grandchildren and none of them have been smacked and thank god they are all growing up into decent human beings

I agree that there is a total lack of respect in many of today's children, and yes it is the parents. I however do not believe in physical punishment as there are better ways to effectively punish children, the fact of the matter is that parents are told that they cant smack kids any more (the old method of punishment generally used by their parents) but they are not taught any new methods so they just hang in the wind and just hope the kids work it out--- obviously they don't. There are few parents who actually take the initiative these days to work out how to raise there kids effectively as they are too caught up with careers and money. Mothers no longer stay at home so children have a lot more free rein and family values are out the window. I think its really sad.

There are plenty ways of disciplining a child/teenager without smacking.
I'm 21 and I was taught not only to respect older people, but to respect everyone. I can't stand people who don't use manners. There really is no need in it. One of the first things I taught my child was manners. Very simple thing but very very important.

I was born in the late 70's and I have to tell you I have great manners and it really wasn't because of my parents. I remember a few times at my school canteen when I bought something I always said please and thank you and the women always commented on my manners. I always hold doors open for others. I have the philosophy that I treat others the way I would like to be treated.
I have to say I was hit when I was a kid by my parents and I kind of resent that. So I don't believe in hitting. I do however believing in pulling a kid up on bad behaviour.

im sorry to say but it is not just young teenagers tht have no manners its mature adults tht dont either. my daughter when she was a baby was nearly pushed out of her buggy by an older person with NO apology now i have a huge bump (as im expecting lol) and its unmissable ive been smacked with baskets and trolleys again no apologies. yeah maybe teenagers do need to learn respect and discipline but if they see mature adults behaving like this then they think its right....im only 24 so maybe manners is something tht you grow out of i dont know, but my daughter has been taught manners etc and so was i and all of the family.... people shouldnt always just look to teenagers and their parents it also the elders of our society too

Hi,
It does work both ways ... it about respect. I have been out before and seen teenagers being rudely spoken too by OAP's and it just not on.
Yes we should all have manners as it goes a long way but it not about who the oldest .... we all need to be respected and to be respectful whatever age we are.

I was born in 53 and was always taught to respect the elders . Now you have these idiots running around making fun of them elderly , insulting them , yelling at them because they aren't moving fast enough , or are taking too long at the check out counter . When I see this I do put my 2 cents in and yell at the punks . This usually causes a domino effect with the others watching the abuse and the punk leaves . I blame the parents .

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU BILL, THIS DAY AND AGE KIDS HAVE NO RESPECT FOR THE ASULTS AROUND.
I HAVE 7 CHILDREN ALL OF WHOM LIVE AT HOME, HOWEVER I DO NOT ALLOW THEM OUT TO PLAY ON STREETS WHERE THEY CAN MIS-LEAD AND SHOWN HOW TO DO BAD THINGS, I:E STEAL CARS ETC.
THE KIDS ARE GETTING WORSE SINCE THEY MADE IT AGAISNT THE LAW TO SMACK YOUR KID.
THE GOVERMENT WILL WONDER IF THEY DID THE RIGHT THING INTRODUCING THAT LAW IN A FEW YEARS TIME, WHEN NO CHILD WILL LISTEN TO THERE PARENT, NO ONE CAN BLAME PARENTS FOR HOW THERE CHILD TURNS OUT WHEN I HAVE SEEN A CHILD THREATEN THERE PARENTS WITH THE POLICE IF THE PARENT DARE RAISE THERE HAND TO THEM.
bRING BACK THE LAW OF THE 50'S 60'S AT LEAST KIDS HAD RESPECT THEN!!!!!!
