Because its a little known fact to some people that 85% of the RAF are not Pilots therefore they have to parade the same as the rest of the military, Bands are part of the British Military Tradition going back over 200 years, if you research the subject you will see even Cavalry Units have bands.
It was discovered also that large groups of soldiers march in a very smart and uniformed manner when parading behind a band, they tend to keep in step and the music can brighten up what is considered a very boring part of the military system called marching.

I know that every branch of the military in the United States has a Marching Band. Its great for moral and fun to boot.
If colleges/Universities have marching bands then so can the Military...

In most Armies, when the band is not performing, their combat duties can consist of guarding the high level command posts, augmenting medical stations, or helping with Chemical Biological & Nuclear decontamination.
