Better to use a filler specially formulated for wood (you can get these in any hardware shop of DIY store for a couple of pounds)

Plaster filler such as polyfilla will not be flexible enough expand and retract with the wood therefore causing cracking etc.

Caulk will sink. If staining then light or dark putty depending on the stain. Ready mix and exterior fillers are too hard. I use a powdered interior filler because they are easy to sand and paint over. Either use Johnstons Leyland Interior filler or Gyproc Easifill filler.

Some decorators swear blind that coving adhesive works well, which I use on large holes as a first fill.

Is the board going to be stained or painted? If you are going to paint it just use a latex caulk and wipe the excess with a damp rag.If you are going to stain it you will need a filler that accepts the stain.Minwax make a good filler for staining.

I've never tried it, but I have to say no because jc is too porous. There are several different kinds of wood hole fillers--premixed, stuff you have to mix. I'd add just a smidge of the stain to the filler before applying it.

Wood putty is available just about anywhere paint and wood stain is sold, even Walmart. It comes in many colors, will take a stain and paint. It is apparently very permanent...I have a desk my grandfather made for me about 35 years ago and the wood putty he used to fill nail holes and small imperfections is still in place.
