There's this kid on my course and he just needs to settle down and learn when to stop. The problem is that he takes the micky out of everyone and everything and people are finding it annoying.
I don't want to insult him or anything, but if he doesn't shut up soon I think I'm going to poke him in the eye!

Ask him how he feels about Kant's Categorical Imperative in the post-Freudian age. Then start warbling on about philosophy. This will shut nearly anyone up.

I'm with the "ignore him" tactic. If he continues to get a reaction, whether positive or negative, he's going to keep going because he's getting some kind of attention which is what he wants. But ignoring him, continuing to talk calmly with whoever you're talking with, not even bothering to look at him or react in any way — he will get the message, though his behavior might get a little extreme at the end in a final attempt to get the attention.

just ignore him, if he asks why, tell him the truth, tell him to grow up & behave like a responsible person. The other thing you could do, is take the micky out of him, he won't like that, those sort of people who take the micky are insecure about themselves. Find the cause of his problem.

You sound like you have a good sense of humour, just tell him exactly what you said above...."If you don't shut up soon I'll poke you in the eye"......then tell him he is making you uncomfortable and to cut it out. And if he continues to do it, then ignore what he says and change the subject.

"Hey, I'd rather you not do that."
"Thats over-doing it."
"Please settle down/stop. I've got a headache."

Um... say, "hey you're being annoying" with a smile.
Haha. Thats probably not the best way.

Yeah. : ) Definitely give a warning if you're going to do something drastic. I was being annoying once, as a kid, and my brother punched me in the gut. I've never gotten over it (its about, oh, 5 years later). Don't make the same mistake!

Hahaha lol i think you might just nicely say "sorry I'm really busy at the moment and if you have nothing nice to say then please dont say anything at all" lol.

I know it sounds a little mean in some ways but honesty gets you a lot further in life then beating around the bush because one day you may well poke his eye out or worse and if it is not you who does it to him someone else might.

So please be sweet and gently tell him that it bothers you and others around you, be nice about it though.

Take care

Later. :-)

I used to be like that kid, until my best friend finally told me that I was not funny but was in fact insulting people. I have since then been brave enough to pass my story onto others like that, and by making it about me it tends to hurt them less!

Do you really mean that? Please don't.What you can do just call him aside and a very humble manner tell him that a lot of students do not like his disruptive behavior but don't have the guts to say so but because you care you would like to help him.Tell him that his behavior annoys a lot of people and if he doesn't change he will loose a lot of friends.

Do not insult him but insult his behaviour. Make up a story about SOMEONE who is really childish and silly, say what that person does. Make sure he listens to your story and make sure he recognizes himself in that person. Provoke him. He will shut up later.
