I was just wondering what the purpose was to wear a headband when practicing Karate. They dont wear them in other martial arts. I personally dont like it. It's too "karate kid-ish."

Umm not sure where you heard that. Ive done shotokan for years, which is Karate and IVE NEVER worn a head band or know one that does!!

that is just a personal thing of those people you see, nothing more, it is NOT a sign of Karate the head band.

They dont wear them in Karate or any other art, only indivuals or an individual school MAY, but that is still odd none the less.

Uniform in Karate consists of your white Gi held up by your Obi or belt. No shoes generally are worn though some ive heard wear a special karate shoe now. That is not traditional but ive heard some places use them.

Other than that this is all they wear for a Uniform, NO HEADBAND! Sorry.

If your dojo wears headbands...I would be worried. The teacher probaly learned karate from the movie karate kid.
I can promise you that here IN Japan (I have been here since 1997), nobody wears a headband!
Time to double check your school...is it really a place you want to train at?

PS..they do wear them in other martial arts that usually have head gear (such as kendo). So, maybe your teacher has just made a small change. It doesn t guarantee that it is a crap school..but it is a sign that it may be... time to look a little closer..good luck.

Not true! All the legitimate schools of the most deadly fighting styles in the world require that students be clearly labeled with a headband emblazoned with the name of the style on it. It is not only a matter of school pride, but also of public safety. For example, real Ninjas wear headbands that say "Ninja" on them--often with the image of a shuriken so illiterate people can figure it out as well. Same with Karate (although the image is typically of a man doing a side kick, so as not to confuse you with a Ninja). To answer your question more fully, yes you should purchase the headband BEFORE you actually begin training as it shows your intent to maybe someday learn, and that will show everybody that you are somebody to watch out for. Trust me, when you enter a room with that headband, everybody will glance nervously at you because they both respect and fear you. I believe that "eBay" will be your most economical source of these headbands, because that's where all the hardcore martial artists sell their extra ones. Good luck and congratulations on your decision to join the exciting world of martial arts action!

Not all karate practioners wear headbands.
Some wear them for 'fashion' purposes, but the practical reason is to keep the sweat from their foreheads dripping into their eyes by soaking into the head bands.

The guys above who said to keep the hair from getting in your eyes and to soak up sweat are right. But there's also another use for it, it can double as an earmuff against those earsplittting kiai that karatekas do. It also holds their head together and acts as an instant bandage in case their skull gets split by a karate chop to the top of their head : P

Well, actually, head band is no other than head band girls used to wear to hold their hair. Since, karate involves constant and hard movement, hair that falls into your eyes is a distraction. Plus, you won't be able to see your opponent So that is the main purpose.

In ancient times there was kanji written across the front. It said who you were or your clan or master was and sometimes the name of some renowned warrior you killed.Sometimes a technique you had a special skill for like "chest splitter "or "belly cutter".

Kind of like advertising today.Essentially it was to keep sweat out of the eyes and to keep the interior of helmets causing abrasions on the forehead as you moved your head around even european knights wore a cushioning cloth inside their helmets.

Today it's just show and has no practical purpose.
