I am by no means a professional photo editor, but I have used GIMP and Photoshop. I like them both. GIMP is free and runs beautifully on my FREE OS Ubuntu, so I have stuck with it. Much love for open source. I have used it to have fun with my sons pics and my wedding photos as well. If you are looking for something "lightweight" for your everyday red eye reduction, changing from color to B&W, cropping and printing you should check out Picasa or F-Spot (LOVE FSPOT!) Download GIMP first and check it out though, what do you have to lose? Happy photo editing!

Photoshop is easier to use and has more features. However, GIMP is free while Photoshop isn't, so it's up to you to decide it if buying Photoshop is worth the extra features.

Photoshop is not as bloated, has more features and it easier to learn. Gimp is a little bloated, has less features, and is a little harder to learn. Upside is Gimp is free. I suggest you try Gimpshop first, and if you start getting into it, definetly invest in Photoshop.

Photoshop will get you a well paid day job, GIMP won't but it is probably nearly as good.

Photoshop CS3 is light years ahead of GIMP, both in features and ease of use.

Six of one, half dozen of the other.

Whichever one you can understand quicker.

Gimp is free, Photoshop isn't.
