SOME OF YOU USED TO DO THOSE THINGS… The clincher here, Paul tells us that some in the church at Corinth HAD BEEN ________. These things are not permanent.

The New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology article by Colin Brown defines it as "male homosexual, pederast, sodomite."
This compound word is actually rather explicit. It is built by combining male and coitus, so there is no real way to be honest with the text and claim some other meaning. Though it strictly describes male homosexual activity, the context in Romans 1 makes it clear that lesbian activity is also condemned.

Just like the ancient church in Corinth, the modern church needs to accept everyone who is striving to leave their past behind them and follow Jesus, but we are also clearly instructed to expel from the local church anyone who (my paraphrase) "claims their sinful lifestyle is OK."

Everyone either quotes Leviticus, the laws of which have supposedly been supplanted by the covenant of grace, through Jesus, or else they quote Pauline Epistles, written by Paul, long after Jesus had risen. Paul never actually met Jesus, but only saw a vision. Now, find something Jesus actually says in the any of the four synoptic gospels that is unambiguously anti-gay. Edit: Leviticus 11:12 "Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you." Do you eat shrimp or lobster? Guess what, that's as bad as being a homosexual according to Leviticus. And you still didn't provide any thing from Jesus regarding the issue.

It is in the Levitical Code twice. If you are going to appeal to the code though, you have to uphold the whole thing. Picking and choosing is dishonest.
Romans and I Corinthians are also often cited, as is I Timothy. However, the words that are translated as 'homosexual' or 'sodomite' in some translations are difficult to render as such with any degree of certainty. No one is sure what they mean.
One of the Greek words that Paul uses, malakoi, probably means effeminate. An effeminate male in the first century would be very different from what we consider effeminate today. A man who cried in public, hung out with women, did a majority of the housework, etc., would be considered a 'malakoi.'
The other word, 'arsenokoitai' is even more obscure in meaning. It only appears in lists in the period literature and therefore it is impossible to nail down any exact meaning. It probably has something to do with male sexual practices, but anything beyond that is highly speculative. If it does refer to homosexuality or homosexual acts, the word is also unhelpful. The range of possible meanings could be a male temple prostitute to a pedophile to a male who forces sex on another male. To include consensual, loving male-male relationships in this list is irresponsible.
It is sad that so few texts whose meanings are so obscure has led to the bigotry, hatred, and discrimination of gay and lesbian people by the church.
The Old Testament is clear on its stance (Leviticus), but you have to follow the whole code if you want to be consistent. The NT is very unclear to the point that to assign any narrow meaning to the words listed above is highly irresponsible scholarship.

Can anybody else post citations that are NOT found in Paul's letters? I know there's supposed to be one early in the pentateuch, but I don't know exactly where. I have a hard time taking Paul's word on things, I'd be more interested in a quote from Jesus or something similar.

Lev 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

While I don't hate homosexuals personally or go out of my way to persecute them, I sure sense a lot of maliciousness and debate when they get on boards like this and accuse Christians of being bigoted, homophobes and what not. We didn't write the Bible or dictate what is right or wrong, God did... so who are we to challenge God's wisdom? Seems like many nations are being depopulated due to AIDS and other diseases caused by fornication (homo and hetero sexual misconduct). I think God had it right to begin with.
