They both have a lot to do and they both have drawbacks.
You don't need a car in NYC. In LA with the subway, this is changing but it still doesn't go to a lot of places.
Money goes farther in LA than it does in NY. Paying for parking in LA might run you up to 12-20 bucks but street parking's actually not as bad as NYC... in NYC I've had to pay 30-50 to park.
3 dollars to use the LA subway system for the entire day.
I seem to go to a lot more places if I'm sightseeing in LA, but traffic can kill a lot of plans. In NY, you're pretty much going to spend most of the day in one area.
Places to eat in NY at 3AM.. in NY you can find a Chinese place, a pizza place, an afterhours cafe...in LA? Dennys or..Dennys, and maybe an afterhours but who knows where.
NY is the better place to work just based on benefits. California labor laws suck.
Both places have good getaway places if you're going to really get out of the area. Nightlife is equal but NYC can go until the sun is up. Both have beaches not too far away. Train and bus to Jones Beach or any of the SoCal beaches. Skiing is driving distance for both. Bed and breakfasts on the east coast, wine country on the west coast. NY you're driving distance from Boston and DC, LA you're driving distance from San Diego and if you want to drive a few hours more, Las Vegas in 5 and a half hours.

I went to LA and the traveling was just inconvenient. Almost everywhere you want to go, you have to go by car in LA and in NY, it's more convenient..we ride the trains, buses, etc.

NY by far the most interesting and versatile city in the world........you can walk anywhere......enjoy the parks, take a run on the promenade, shop, write, bike, go anywhere, anytime and walk.....no need to hop in a car......also if you live there and never want to go out you can order food from practically any restaurant and have it delivered anytime.....have your groceries delivered................you can watch a good movie, enjoy many museums, even go horseback riding in central park!

Out of your three options: definitely New York. They have a colorful history, and their modern scene is still thriving (especially on Long Island!) Other great scenes: Florida, Richmond VA, Pennsylvania, DC, New Jersey, Chicago, and Minneapolis.
