Look for a used mossberg model 500 at a pawn shop. I bought a used on in decent condition for $175 a few years ago. I've had it out in the rain, sand, and snow and it has never failed me.

Also keep a look out for a mossberg 20 guage, they usually run in the $150-$175 dollar range used.

What EVO said. A Mossberg is a dependable gun, despite what some kids who love the 870 say. Buy some ammunition to break it in and familiarize yourself with it, as well. They're often more reliable than an 870 Express and the dual extractor design provides a more consistent ejection. The shell elevator stays up when the bolt is forward for easier loading in a bad situation. The thumb safety is easier to manipulate than a trigger guard safety. The slide, in my oppinion, is smoother and easier to opperate. Speaking of slides, the slide release on the Mossbergs are behind the trigger where your hand normally rests. The Remington's release is infront of the trigger guard, where you have to move your hand from the trigger to unlock it.

As for home defense loads, Remington high velocity steel is unlikely to penetrate two layers of sheetrock and still have enough energy to be lethal, but if penetration isn't an issue a few packs of Brenneke KO slugs will work wonders. Make sure to aim your shots.

some solid solutions right here already; Remington 870 or Mossberg 500. enable me to remark on the heavy balk you experienced.... it would desire to be one in all 2 issues...or a mixture of the two... First, you should carry the shotgun firmly against your shooting shoulder. in case you do not carry it against your shoulder, it has the possibility to return and forth a one million/2-inch and then belt you. think of of it this way, if we had a bar room wager and you have been going to permit me to punch you in the shoulder, the place would you like me to initiate my fist? would you desire me to place my fist a foot way out of your shoulder...or precise up against it and then attempt to punch? Yep! you'll want my fist precise on your shoulder so as that i could not produce any ability with my strike...then it would basically be a push rather of a punch. yet another component is, you should carry on tight with the two palms. think of roughly conserving the forearm (pump) with one hand and the pistolgrip area with the different. do not overdo it...yet determine you carry firmly so as that the gun does not "boss you around". 2nd, it would have been one in all those ammunition you have been shooting. If somebody grew to become into providing you with 3 inch magnum shells to shoot by way of that gun, then it would punish you. The shorter, 2 3/4 inch magnums punish somewhat much less. Then the intense brass interest plenty even much less. Then the low brass one million one million/8 ounce aim plenty much less. finally, the lightest shells are the cheap promo plenty that in basic terms %. an oz. of shot in a 12 gauge shell and are made regularly for informal aim shooting and perchance looking chipmunks. combine this suggestion of shooting decrease powered (greater less expensive) shells and conserving the gun tight with the two palms and firmly against your shoulder...and you will have not any problem firing a hundred rounds of 12 gauge shells with the comparable volume of discomfort you felt after firing in basic terms 5 rounds formerly. Oh yeah and one greater component. Felt balk is a consequence of ways heavy or gentle a shotgun is in terms of weight. Lighter weapons kick greater because of the fact they only pass the flexibility decrease back to the shooter. A heavier gun would have much less felt balk. think of a 12 gauge shotgun barrel on a cannon mount. it is not going to pass the wheels. So, I choose the Remington 870 because of the fact it makes use of a heavier metallic receiver that has a tendency to hose down the felt balk. (Mossbergs use a mild aluminum receiver.)

Your idea is right, but don't focus on cost...maybe spend
a little more on something reliable.
